Bad adverb.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Good modifiers:<\/h3>\n<p>Same thing works with adjectives. Use them to change, not intensify, meaning:<\/p>\n<h5>\u201cJosef studied it, feeling as he sailed toward freedom as if he weighed nothing at all, as if every <em>precious burden<\/em> had been lifted from him.\u201d<\/h5>\n<h6>\u2014 Michael Chabon, author, in <em>The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier &amp; Clay<\/em><\/h6>\n<h5>\u201cThe combination of a hard-won cynicism, low overhead, an <em>unstintingly shoddy<\/em> product line, and the American boy\u2019s unassuageable hunger for midget radios, X-ray spectacles, and joy buzzers had enabled Anapol not only to survive the Depression but to keep his two daughters in private school \u2026\u201d<\/h5>\n<h6>\u2014 Michael Chabon, author, in <em>The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier &amp; Clay<\/em><\/h6>\n<h5>\u201cAfter the coffee he recrossed the room and remained standing, stooped over the keyboard in his overcoat, while he played with both hands by the <em>exhausted afternoon light<\/em> the notes as he had written them.\u201d<\/h5>\n<h6>\u2014 Ian McEwan, author, in <em>Amsterdam<\/em><\/h6>\n<h3>\u2018Gently ransacked\u2019<\/h3>\n<p>So, in a recent writing contest, I asked you to show us how it\u2019s done.
