&#8220;Maytag blue cheese&#8221; and &#8220;buttery plump pasta,&#8221; for instance \u2014 can increase restaurant sales up to 27 percent, according to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2009\/12\/23\/dining\/23menus.html?_r=1&amp;pagewanted=all\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">research by Brian Wansink<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, diners feel more satisfied after eating a Southwestern Tex-Mex Salad than after eating the same salad with a blander name.<\/p>\n<p>So why do these adjectives sell while others just get in the way?<\/p>\n<h3>Deliver real meaning.<\/h3>\n<p>Adjectives work when they deliver real meaning and not &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/revvingupreadership.com\/2023\/04\/modifiers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the illusion of meaning without its substance<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Roger Dooley, blogger at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.neurosciencemarketing.com\/blog\/home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Neuromarketing<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.neurosciencemarketing.com\/blog\/articles\/adjective-power.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">suggests using adjectives<\/a> that are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Vivid<\/strong>. &#8220;Freshly cracked,&#8221; &#8220;light-and-fluffy,&#8221; &#8220;handcrafted,&#8221; \u201ctriple-basted\u201d and \u201cslow-cooked\u201d paint pictures in the readers&#8217; minds. Those pictures are more compelling than, say, a plain, old omelet.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Sensory<\/strong>. I, for one, want my bacon applewood smoked. Descriptions like this engage the readers&#8217; senses.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Emotional or nostalgic<\/strong>. \u201c&#8217;Aged Vermont cheddar,'&#8221; he writes, &#8220;evokes images of crusty New England dairymen rather than Kraft mega-plants.&#8221; &#8220;Boodie&#8217;s Chicken Liver Masala&#8221; and &#8220;Grandma&#8217;s zucchini cookies&#8221; also evoke emotion and nostalgia.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Specific<\/strong>. &#8220;Wild Alaskan&#8221; salmon conjures up &#8220;visions of vigorous, healthy fish swimming in pristine, unpolluted streams,&#8221; he writes.\u00a0 A diner can dream, can&#8217;t she.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Branded<\/strong>. I strongly prefer Maytag, Stilton and Roquefort to plain old blue cheese \u2026 even though I&#8217;m not that clear on the difference.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Change the picture.<\/h3>\n<p>Bottom line: Sprinkle in a few adjectives when they&#8217;ll change the picture in the reader&#8217;s head or otherwise engage the senses.
