Here are nine ways:<\/p>\n<h3>1. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wyliecomm.com\/writing-tips\/persuasive-writing\/\">Think Like a Reader<\/a>.<\/h3>\n<p>I once worked with a client on an article about customer service. The head:<\/p>\n<h5 class=\"standalone\">Be A Customer Champion. Be Elite<\/h5>\n<p>About 250 words in \u2014 in an oh-by-the-way aside \u2014 the article mentioned that winners would get an all-expenses-paid trip to Vegas.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s a winning marketing strategy: Giving away a trip to Vegas, a drone or an Apple watch? Mention that in the headline.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s the rewrite:<\/p>\n<h5>Win a trip for two to Las Vegas<\/h5>\n<h6>ABC customer service program honors XYZ<\/h6>\n<h3>2. Call out to readers.<\/h3>\n<p>\u201cIf you want mothers to read \u2026 display \u2018Mothers\u2019 in your headline,\u201d advised advertising guru David Ogilvy.<\/p>\n<p>So call out to readers. Write headlines that start with <em>IT managers, Business owners<\/em> or <em>Nurses<\/em>, for example. I love this one, from Workers Compensation Board-Alberta:<\/p>\n<h5>Case managers: There\u2019s an app for that!<\/h5>\n<h6>Injured workers can now get claims updates on their phones<\/h6>\n<h3>3. Use this headline formula.<\/h3>\n<p>Want to boost click through rates, engagement and sales? Here\u2019s a simple formula to try for writing a great headline:<\/p>\n<h5 class=\"standalone\">Write about your greatest benefit for your reader\u2019s greatest need.<\/h5>\n<p>For communicators, that might be:<\/p>\n<h5 class=\"standalone\">Sail through the approval process and go home early.<\/h5>\n<p>For semiconductor engineers, that might be:<\/p>\n<h5 class=\"standalone\">Move from concept to simulation to prototype with a few keystrokes.<\/h5>\n<p>For gamers, that might be:<\/p>\n<h5 class=\"standalone\">Level up your character to 85.<\/h5>\n<h3>4. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wyliecomm.com\/writing-tips\/persuasive-writing\/features-vs-benefits\/\">Focus on benefits, not features<\/a>.<\/h3>\n<p>\u201cWould you rather read a letter labeled \u2018Dues Notice\u2019?\u201d asks Jeffrey Gitomer, principal of BuyGitomer Inc. Or one with the headline, \u201cBuild your business and boost your bottom line next year\u201d?<\/p>\n<p>Your conference isn\u2019t a benefit. Your product isn\u2019t a benefit. Neither are your services, programs or ideas.<\/p>\n<p>What those things will <em>do<\/em> for the reader is the benefit.<\/p>\n<p>Instead of:<\/p>\n<h5 class=\"standalone\">Women\u2019s Health Conference<\/h5>\n<p>Make it:<\/p>\n<h5 class=\"standalone\">Revitalize your sexuality and justify your chocolate obsession<\/h5>\n<p>Instead of:<\/p>\n<h5 class=\"standalone\">XYZ Company announces new disability insurance<\/h5>\n<p>Make it:<\/p>\n<h5 class=\"standalone\">Get back to work faster with ITT Hartford\u2019s new Ability Assurance<\/h5>\n<p>Instead of:<\/p>\n<h5 class=\"standalone\">XYZ Company announces new product<\/h5>\n<p>Make it:<\/p>\n<h5 class=\"standalone\">Grow bigger, lusher plants \u2014 and never have to water again \u2014 with XYZ\u2019s SuperPlantGro<\/h5>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not about what you do,\u201d writes Alan Weiss, consultant and principal of Summit Consulting. \u201cIt\u2019s about what I can do after you\u2019re done.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Readers love benefits, because they focus on readers\u2019 favorite topic: themselves. So don\u2019t be afraid to layer on the benefits. Recreational Products Insurance published a brochure for agents with this head and deck:<\/p>\n<h5>Rev Up Your Sales<\/h5>\n<h6>Launch more business with more products<\/h6>\n<p>Subheads continued to ladle on the benefits:<\/p>\n<h6>Crank up volume<\/h6>\n<h6>Drive in profits<\/h6>\n<h6>Collect a bonus<\/h6>\n<h3>5. Use power words.<\/h3>\n<p>Benefits are verbs, not nouns. So to write effective headlines, focus on benefits-oriented verbs and verb phrases. Quantify and specify benefits.<\/h3>\n<p>While reviewing a marketing post for a client recently, I came across this headline:<\/p>\n<h5 class=\"standalone\">Reap many rewards.<\/h5>\n<p>Well \u2026 that\u2019s a little broad. It\u2019s not very interesting, because it\u2019s not visual. It begs credibility, because it sounds like the communicator couldn\u2019t come up with any real benefits. And it could apply to virtually any product from virtually any company in virtually any industry.<\/p>\n<p>If your benefits statements are too broad, they\u2019ll come off sounding generic and meaningless. To make your message more concrete, compelling and credible, quantify and specify your benefits.<\/p>\n<p>A participant in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wyliecomm.com\/corporate-communications-training\/\">one of my writing workshops<\/a> was working on a brochure to convince customers to move from paper statements to electronic ones. His first headline:<\/p>\n<h5 class=\"standalone\">Save the environment with paperless statements.<\/h5>\n<p>I want to believe. But the benefit is so over-the-top, I just can\u2019t. So I asked him to specify his benefit statement with a tangible, true detail. His rewrite:<\/p>\n<h5 class=\"standalone\">Save half a tree a year with paperless statements.<\/h5>\n<p>One way to make your benefit more concrete is to add a numeral. Woman\u2019s Touch Mammopad communicators, for instance, went for this broad \u2014 and to some women, somewhat discomforting \u2014 message in a brochure:<\/p>\n<h5 class=\"standalone\">Discover the comfort of a softer mammogram. \u2026 Mammopad is like adding a woman\u2019s touch to the procedure itself.<\/h5>\n<p>And the communicators buried this quantifiable detail at the bottom of the message:<\/p>\n<h5 class=\"standalone\">Three out of four women reported a reduction in discomfort of nearly 50%.<\/h5>\n<p>So how about a headline like:<\/p>\n<h5 class=\"standalone\">How would you like your next mammogram to be 50% more comfortable?<\/h5>\n<p>Hey, I\u2019m happy with an asterisk to mousetype legalese if it allows me to write a quantifiable benefit.<\/p>\n<p>Notice how quantifying and specifying make this envelope teaser for the World Wildlife Fund more powerful:<\/p>\n<h5 class=\"standalone\">Every day an estimated 800 dolphins, porpoises and whales will die \u2026<\/h5>\n<h5 class=\"standalone\">\u2026 unless you act now<\/h5>\n<p>Yikes! I\u2019m writing a check before I\u2019ve opened the envelope!<\/p>\n<p>The more you know about your products and services, the more specific you can be. So drill down. Study the spec sheets. Ask questions.<\/p>\n<p>Learn enough about the people, places and things you\u2019re promoting to quantify and specify.<\/p>\n<h3>7. Add a numeral.<\/h3>\n<p>Speaking of numerals \u2026<\/p>\n<p>Next time you hit the Safeway, take a look at the magazines displayed at the checkout counter. Chances are, you\u2019ll find that they\u2019re packed with numerals.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s a good reason for that: Headlines with numerals, like Top 10, promise quantifiable value. And that draws readers. \u201cNumbers sell,\u201d writes Richard Riccelli, president of Post Rd, Inc.<\/p>\n<p>Whether you\u2019re writing a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wyliecomm.com\/2022\/02\/how-to-story-template\/\">tipsheet or service story<\/a>, a blog post or a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wyliecomm.com\/writing-tips\/persuasive-writing\/\">marketing piece<\/a>, add a numeral to the headline. That will increase your message\u2019s chance of getting opened, read and shared.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Add numerals online.<\/strong> Numerals are power tools that get:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Shared in<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wyliecomm.com\/writing-tips\/blog-writing-tips\/\"><strong>social media<\/strong><\/a>. Articles with numerals in their headline tend to be shared more on Facebook than stories without digits, according to research by viral marketing scientist Dan Zarrella.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Engagement on blogs<\/strong>. My year-end roundup posts of PRSA\u2019s <em>Issues &amp; Trends<\/em> blog always score Nos. 1 or 2 for the year, according to editor John Elsasser.  That\u2019s because they include numerals, like \u201c7 writing tips for the New Year.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>Attention on<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wyliecomm.com\/writing-tips\/writing-for-the-web-and-mobile\/\"><strong>webpages<\/strong><\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/revvingupreadership.com\/2021\/02\/add-numerals-to-headlines-for-relevant-content-marketing\/\">Numerals are more scannable<\/a>, according to usability expert Jakob Nielsen. And they deliver tangible facts, which is what web visitors seek online.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Readership of releases<\/strong>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wyliecomm.com\/writing-tips\/public-relations-writing\/\">News releases<\/a> with numerals in the headline performed better than those without, according to a study by PR Newswire.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Opened in email<\/strong>. EmailLabs ran a split test of these three <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wyliecomm.com\/writing-tips\/how-to-write-an-email\/email-subject-lines\/email-subject-line-best-practices\/\">subject lines<\/a>:<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h5 class=\"standalone\">Using Link Click-Through Tracking to Segment Your List<\/h5>\n<p>3 Tips to Improve Your Newsletter\u2019s ROI<\/p>\n<h5 class=\"standalone\">Build Your List Through \u201cPiggy-Back Marketing\u201d<\/h5>\n<p>The subject line promising \u201c3 Tips\u201d produced both higher open and click-through rates than the other two.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Select the right numbers<\/strong>: To choose the best numerals for your headlines:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Favor odd numbers<\/strong>. Oddly, odd numbers sell better than even ones, according to <em>Folio<\/em>: So <em>7 Steps<\/em> may be more effective than <em>10 Tips<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Choose specific numbers<\/strong>. \u201c101 or 99 work better than 100,\u201d Riccelli writes. \u201c65 is better than 75.\u201d <em>59 seconds<\/em> is more specific than <em>one minute<\/em>, for instance.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Better yet, make it 7<\/strong>. That number seems to appeal to readers. The number 13, on the other hand, does not.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Don\u2019t overwhelm readers<\/strong>. I\u2019m not looking for \u201c66 steps to 6-pack abs.\u201d \u201cSaying \u201835 best exercises\u2019 is too many,\u201d Men\u2019s Health editor Dave Zinczenko told The New York Times. \u201cBut \u2018789 great new tips for summer\u2019 is fine. That says value without saying work.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>But don\u2019t underwhelm readers, either<\/strong>. Posts with headlines promoting seven or more items outperformed those with six or fewer, according to an internal study of HubSpot\u2019s blog. While HubSpot still posts pieces with six or fewer items, writes Pamela Vaughan, HubSpot\u2019s lead blog strategist, the inbound marketing experts don\u2019t promote that quantity in the headline.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Avoid numbers for serious subjects<\/strong>. \u201c14 ways to deal with breast cancer,\u201d for instance, sounds flip.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>So instead of:<\/p>\n<h5 class=\"standalone\">Increase profits<\/h5>\n<p>Take a tip from Ann Bloch, principal of Ann Bloch Communications, and try something like:<\/p>\n<h5 class=\"standalone\">Do 3 things you hate \u2026 and watch your income double<\/h5>\n<p>Or steal a trick from the tabloids with something like:<\/p>\n<h5 class=\"standalone\">Lose 7 pounds a week without drugs or a diet<\/h5>\n<h3>8. Develop a vignette.<\/h3>\n<p>Keynote speaker Tom Antion suggests:<\/p>\n<h5>Speaking puts me in a higher tax bracket<\/h5>\n<h6>Maybe it can do the same for you<\/h6>\n<h3>9.
