Identify the passive voice.<\/h3>\n<p>First, identify passive sentences.<\/p>\n<h3>Active voice<\/h3>\n<p>The active voice uses simple sentence structure:<\/p>\n<h5 class=\"standalone\">Subject, verb, object.<br \/>\nMan bites dog.<\/h5>\n<h3>Passive voice<\/h3>\n<p>Invert that simple sentence structure, and you\u2019ve got a passive voice sentence:<\/p>\n<h5 class=\"standalone\">Object, verb, subject.<br \/>\nDog is bitten by man.<\/h5>\n<p>Note how the subject of the sentence is no longer performing the action of the verb.<\/p>\n<h3>Passive voice, agent deleted<\/h3>\n<p>Sometimes we drop the subject altogether:<\/p>\n<h5 class=\"standalone\">Object, verb.<br \/>\nDog is bitten.<\/h5>\n<p>As a friend from FedEx says, \u201cIf you can add <em>by my grandma<\/em> to the end of a sentence, it\u2019s probably passive voice, agent deleted.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<h5 class=\"standalone\">Dog is bitten by my grandma.<\/h5>\n<h3>2. Avoid passive problems\u00a0<\/h3>\n<p>You can see the problems. A passive sentence:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Reduces comprehension<\/strong>. Passive voice is harder to understand than active voice, found G. R. Klare in a review of 36 readability studies. In fact, of the Top 5 characteristics that make sentences harder to read, passive voice ranked No. 2.<\/p>\n<p>In another study, Robert Charrow and linguist Veda Charrow found that jurors understood active passages 31% better than passive ones.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Is longer than active voice<\/strong>. Passive voice can take up to two-thirds more words than the active voice.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Has a slippery, untouched-by-human-hands feel<\/strong>. Compare: \u201cI made mistakes\u201d to \u201cMistakes were made.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With the passive voice, it sounds as if nobody was in the room when it happened. As a result, the passive voice hurts your credibility by making readers wonder what you\u2019re hiding. As Joseph M. Williams, author of <em>Style: Toward Clarity and Grace<\/em>, says:<\/p>\n<h5 class=\"standalone\">\u201cChoose the passive when you don\u2019t know who did it, your readers don\u2019t care who did it, or you don\u2019t want them to know who did it.\u201d<\/h5>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t know, don\u2019t care, don\u2019t want them to know\u201d shouldn\u2019t happen very often.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Saps energy from sentences<\/strong>. Passive voice transforms energetic verbs \u2014 bites, for instance \u2014 into forms of the verb to be, such as is bitten.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Isn\u2019t conversational<\/strong>. We don\u2019t speak in the passive voice, so we shouldn\u2019t write that way.<\/p>\n<h3>3. Make sure the subject is doing the verb.<\/h3>\n<p>An editor friend was once surprised on reviewing an engineer\u2019s contribution to a company newsletter to find that it was absolutely free of the passive voice.<\/p>\n<h5 class=\"standalone\">When the editor praised the engineer, he said, a bit huffily:<\/p>\n<h5 class=\"standalone\">\u201cI know that every sentence needs a subject and a verb and that the subject should be doing the verb.\u201d<\/h5>\n<p>That\u2019s as good an explanation as I\u2019ve heard on how to write in the active voice. (It\u2019s so good, I\u2019ve threatened to make it a T-shirt or tattoo!)<\/p>\n<p>To activate the passive voice, read the sentence and find the verb:<\/p>\n<h5 class=\"standalone\">bitten<\/h5>\n<p>Figure out who\u2019s doing the verb:<\/p>\n<h5 class=\"standalone\">man<\/h5>\n<p>Put that person in front of the the active verb:<\/p>\n<h5 class=\"standalone\">Man bites dog.<\/h5>\n<p>Now your sentence includes subject, verb, object \u2014 in the right order.
