People spend, on average:<\/p>\n<p> \t<strong>1. More than five hours a day on interpersonal emails<\/strong>, according to the\u00a02019 Adobe Email Usage study<strong>.<\/strong> That includes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Three-plus hours a day on work messages<\/strong>: \u201cCan we meet at 3?\u201d \u201cHere\u2019s the report I promised.\u201d \u201cWhen can you get me the social media strategy?\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>Two-plus hours a day on<\/strong> <strong>personal email<\/strong>: \u201cWould you pick up Greek yogurt on your way home from work?\u201d \u201cI have good gossip; meet for margaritas at 5?\u201d \u201cMay I show you the most darling picture of my kitty?\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Add Slack and text messages, and you can see that we spend the bulk of our days communicating interpersonally.<\/p>\n<p>But that\u2019s not the kind of information PR pros and other communicators are worried about \u2026<\/p>\n<p> \t<strong>2. 48 minutes a day reading for business,<\/strong> according to a study by The Economist Intelligence Unit and Peppercomm.<\/p>\n<p>That includes <em>The Wall Street Journal, The Harvard Business Review,<\/em> the best trade publications in the business, <em>PR Tactics <\/em>and other association publications, the latest leadership books, the HubSpot blog and more.<\/p>\n<p>Whatever time remains \u2014 and that\u2019s not much \u2014 may get divvied up between business-to-business brand content.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s get real: How much of that 48 minutes are they spending with your white paper?<\/p>\n<p> \t<strong>3. 16.2 minutes a day reading for fun,<\/strong> according to the 2019 American Time Use Survey from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.<\/p>\n<p>Right now, I\u2019m squeezing into my 16.2 minutes a day: Melissa Banks\u2019 novel <em>The Wonder Spot, Psychology Today,<\/em> a guidebook on Uruguay and <em>The New York Times.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>That leaves virtually zero seconds for your email newsletter on \u201c3 reasons you need an eye exam (even if you have 20\/20 vision),\u201d your message inviting me to share my thoughts on your business or other business-to-consumer messages.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s get real: How much of that 16.2 minutes are they spending with your email newsletter?<\/p>\n<h3>How to get through to readers \u2026<\/h3>\n<p>One way to get through to readers with way too much to read and way too little time to read it is to give readers more for less. Give them more information they can use to live their lives better in less time and space.<\/p>\n<p>Keep this formula in mind: The average reader reads about 200 words per minute.
