To avoid lifeless language, cut common clich\u00e9s in your own writing. Here are three ways to replace tired clich\u00e9s in your writing with fresh metaphors:<\/p>\n<h3>1. Search and destroy clich\u00e9s.<\/h3>\n<p>Use these six steps to identify clich\u00e9s that need to be replaced:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Review your piece of writing<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Test your metaphors for overuse<\/strong>. Plug the term into Google, and see how many links you get. \u201cWhen I plugged in \u2018grim task,\u2019 I found 55,400 links,\u201d writes Roy Peter Clark, Poynter Institute senior scholar. \u201cBut the most common use came from journalists reporting on crime, accidents and natural disasters.\u201d If you get too many hits, your phrase is overused. It\u2019s a clich\u00e9, not a metaphor.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Test your metaphors for vividness<\/strong>. A working metaphor paints a picture in your mind. No picture, no metaphor. You\u2019re probably looking at a clich\u00e9.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Test your metaphors for timeliness<\/strong>. It\u2019s Ann Wylie\u2019s rule of metaphors: \u201cIf we don\u2019t do it literally any more, we can\u2019t do it literarily any more.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>Circle every clich\u00e9<\/strong>. Each one is a sign that your message needs a metaphor.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Substitute fresh metaphors for tired clich\u00e9s<\/strong>. Write new analogies that your contemporary audience can actually relate to.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3>2. Conduct a clich\u00e9 watch.<\/h3>\n<p>Want to make sure your website isn\u2019t packed with clich\u00e9s? Try this approach:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Make a list of clich\u00e9s you want to avoid<\/strong>. Make this list part of your site\u2019s or organization\u2019s style guide.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Search your site<\/strong> to see how often you use them.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li><strong>Replace those clich\u00e9s<\/strong> with fresh metaphors.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You may be surprised at how much your messages rely on dreary, overused phrases. Once you find them, avoid clich\u00e9s by substituting new metaphors for old idioms.<\/p>\n<h3>3. Avoid \u2018first-level creativity.\u2019<\/h3>\n<p>When writing a metaphor, don\u2019t use the first comparison that comes to mind, counsels Roy Peter Clark, Poynter Institute senior scholar. He writes:\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When tempted by a tired phrase, \u2018white as snow,\u2019 stop writing. Take what the practitioners of natural childbirth call a \u2018cleansing breath.\u2019 Then jot down the old phrase on a piece of paper. Start scribbling alternatives \u2026<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I have described one clich\u00e9 of vision as \u2018first-level creativity.\u2019 For example, it\u2019s impossible to survive a week of American journalism without reading or hearing the phrase: \u2018But the dream became a nightmare\u2019 \u2026<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Writers who reach the first level of creativity think they are being original or clever. In fact, they settle for the ordinary, the dramatic or humorous place any writer can reach with minimal effort.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Take Clark\u2019s advice.<\/p>\n<p>If your &#8220;analogies&#8221; flow from your fingertips with no thought at all \u2026 perhaps it\u2019s because you haven\u2019t been thinking enough. And without thinking, you\u2019re more likely to call up a clich\u00e9 than a fresh metaphor.<\/p>\n<p>Back away from the computer. Breathe.
