Choose a single metaphor, and stick with it. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shutterstock.com\/image-photo\/megaphone-shadow-on-isolated-background-art-2063697719\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Image by svetazi<\/em><\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Here are some other metaphor do\u2019s and don\u2019ts:<\/p>\n<h3>DO sync with the subject.<\/h3>\n<p>Match your metaphor to your message\u2019s topic and tone.<\/p>\n<p>I once found a participant in one of my writing workshops comparing her company\u2019s new shopping mall to \u201cthe phoenix rising from the ashes.\u201d Not only was that a clich\u00e9, it was also the wrong comparison and tone for the topic \u2014 not to mention the wrong scale.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThunderous dunks and lightning-quick running backs offend the serious reader in two ways: 1) They are clich\u00e9s; and 2) They are questionable, even as hyperbole,\u201d writes Steve Wilson, sports writer, <em>Fort Worth Star-Telegram<\/em>. \u201cUnless we can create a fresh image or make a strong case for hyperbole, we should equate forces of nature with acts of humanity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The best metaphors are appropriate to the topic, tone, occasion and audience.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sync with the topic<\/strong>. The more your metaphor draws from the topic, the more elegant the result will be, as this passage from a Time magazine movie review of sensational summer movies illustrates:<\/p>\n<h5 class=\"standalone\">Instead of leaving the theater with a rosy glow or warm tears, dyna-moviegoers feel like a James Bond vodka martini. They have been shaken but not stirred.<\/h5>\n<p><strong>Sync with the audience<\/strong>. This metaphor from Speechwriter\u2019s Newsletter is in perfect sync with the audience:<\/p>\n<h5 class=\"standalone\">I hope your holidays were holidays and that, when they were over, your brain began to hum like an old IBM Selectric.<\/h5>\n<h3>DON\u2019T overdo it.<\/h3>\n<p>A 6-course metaphorical feast can be too rich to digest \u2014 and can make your reader feel a bit nauseated after. Break it up with some plain-vanilla explanation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCram three similes into a single paragraph and you become a parody,\u201d writes Jack Hart in <em>A Writer\u2019s Coach.<\/em> \u201cWrite page after page of featureless prose and you become a drudge. So work your way through a rough draft eliminating and adding color. A figure of speech every third of fourth paragraph is usually about right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Try Hart\u2019s recommendation:<\/p>\n<h5 class=\"standalone\">Limit your metaphors to one every three or four paragraphs or so.<\/h5>\n<p><strong>Communicate, don\u2019t decorate<\/strong>. The key: Make sure your metaphors don\u2019t distract from your message. So ask, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wyliecomm.com\/2021\/03\/communicate-dont-decorate-for-creative-content-marketing\/\">Is this metaphor architecture?<\/a> Or interior design?\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Don\u2019t write a groaner.<\/h3>\n<p>Metaphors can be great. They can grab attention, clarify complex concepts and entertain your readers.<\/p>\n<p>But sometimes writers, working toward a metaphor, reach too far and wind up writing a groaner instead.
