Richard Zahler of <em>The Seattle Times<\/em> suggests that when you\u2019re interviewing for story, you let:<\/p>\n<h5 class=\"standalone\">Who stand for character<\/h5>\n<h5 class=\"standalone\">What stand for plot<\/h5>\n<h5 class=\"standalone\">When stand for chronology<\/h5>\n<h5 class=\"standalone\">Where stand for setting<\/h5>\n<h5 class=\"standalone\">Why stand for motivation<\/h5>\n<p>Using this approach, \u201cwhat,\u201d for example, is transformed into questions like:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cWhat happened next?\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cWhat were you thinking when \u2026?\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cWhat made you say that?\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Those questions can lead to stories \u2014 not just the facts.<\/p>\n<h3>Beyond the five W\u2019s<\/h3>\n<p>You know all about the five W\u2019s. But what questions can you ask to make your piece an interesting story instead of just a report?<\/p>\n<p>Get answers to these questions, three of my favorite interviewing queries:<\/p>\n<h3>1. So, as I understand it \u2026<\/h3>\n<p>When writing, you need to be able to express technical language in your own words. Instead of waiting until you\u2019re alone at your desk, translate key concepts into lay language during the interview and get your subject matter expert\u2019s feedback.<\/p>\n<h3>2. What\u2019s in it for our readers?<\/h3>\n<p>Don\u2019t leave the interview without understanding the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wyliecomm.com\/writing-tips\/persuasive-writing\/features-vs-benefits\/\">benefit to your readers<\/a>. If you don\u2019t know why your readers should care about this story, will they?<\/p>\n<h3>3. Would you give me an example of that?<\/h3>\n<p>People don\u2019t understand ideas; they understand things. So the writer\u2019s job is to translate ideas into things. This question will help you make your copy more accessible and interesting.<\/p>\n<h3>Types of questions to ask in the interview<\/h3>\n<p>I once worked with a communicator who went into each interview armed with a list of questions in a notebook. He\u2019d leave three or four blank lines in between each question for writing the answers. I always wondered what he\u2019d do if the subject-matter expert had more to say on the topic \u2014 cut her off?<\/p>\n<p>Interviews should feel more like conversations than Q&amp;As. Still, the best interviewers do start with a plan \u2014 an outline of points to cover if nothing else.<\/p>\n<p>Before you conduct your interview, plan for these three types of good questions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Open-ended questions<\/strong>. \u201cWhy\u201d and \u201chow\u201d questions get to motivation and approach. They encourage lengthy answers and can lead to good quotes.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Closed-ended questions<\/strong>. Open-ended questions give you abstract information but little detail. Follow up with questions to get specific answers. As Roy Peter Clark, vice president and senior scholar at The Poynter Institute, says: \u201cGet the name of the dog.\u201d Closed-ended questions will give you color and detail.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Questions to draw out anecdotes<\/strong>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wyliecomm.com\/writing-tips\/how-to-write-creative-content\/corporate-storytelling\/\">Anecdotes<\/a> \u2014 little stories \u2014 are among the best ways to get reader attention. It\u2019s a good idea to find the central anecdote, one that can serve as your lead, before leaving the interview.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>And avoid these three types of questions in your interview:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Yes-or-no questions<\/strong>. They elicit yes-or-no answers.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Long, complex questions<\/strong>. Ask a confusing question, get a confused answer.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Multipart questions<\/strong>. How will you know which part the subject-matter expert is answering?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Add a sixth W.<\/h3>\n<p>Now, readers are looking for the answer to another \u201cW,\u201d says Rich Boehne, E.W. Scripps Co. chief operating officer:<\/p>\n<h5 class=\"standalone\">\u201cWhat\u2019s next?\u201d<\/h5>\n<p>\u201cI preach constantly [that] in today\u2019s environment, it\u2019s much less about who, what, when and where,\u201d Boehne says. \u201cIt\u2019s about why and what\u2019s next. In an environment where you do have a multitude of voices, the opportunity to bring context and color and perspective is I think our real role.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Good point. Fewer words! Shorter sentences! \u2014 we don\u2019t focus so much on how.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>Writing is hard because we weren\u2019t taught how to write. Instead, we were taught how to edit: how to spell, punctuate and use the right grammar.<\/p>\r\n\t\r\n<p>But there is a <em>how<\/em> to writing.
