(The reason for the increase? More mobile-friendly emails, says Litmus.)<\/p>\n<p>One of the best email marketing strategies, then, is to write short emails. (It may be almost as important as polishing your email subject lines.)<\/p>\n<h3>Why so short?<\/h3>\n<p>Why do people spend so little time with marketing emails?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Too many emails<\/strong>. Organizations and individuals send out <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/456500\/daily-number-of-e-mails-worldwide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">306.4 billion emails a day<\/a>, according to Statista. That\u2019s a lot of competition for attention in the inbox. (And that doesn\u2019t include all of the email marketing pieces, blog posts and other content marketing pieces screaming for your readers\u2019 attention?<\/li>\n<li><strong>Tiny screens<\/strong>. Around <a href=\"https:\/\/uplandsoftware.com\/adestra\/resources\/blog\/top-10-email-clients\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">61% of emails are opened on a mobile device<\/a>, according to Adestra. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wyliecomm.com\/2017\/08\/5-obstacles-to-reading-on-smartphones\/\">That tiny screen causes all kinds of usability problems<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Audience and sender sophistication<\/strong>. As email newsletters have become shorter, more visual and more scannable, subscribers have learned to expect more tightly edited e-zines.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>How long should emails be?<\/h3>\n<p>So how long should your email be for the best open rate? To get people to land on your landing page? Depends on whom you ask \u2014 and on what type of email you are sending.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.constantcontact.com\/email-images\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Emails of about 20 lines of text had the highest click-throughs<\/a>, according to a study of more than 2.1 million customers by Constant Contact. So <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wyliecomm.com\/writing-tips\/what-is-readability\/short-content\/best-length-for-a-blog-post\/\">figure Average Reading Time, or A.R.T.<\/a>, a concept created by The Poynter Institute\u2019s Roy Peter Clark.<\/p>\n<p>To figure A.R.T., multiply the number of minutes you think people will spend reading your message by 200 words per minute.
