Verb &gt; Object<\/h5>\n<h5 class=\"standalone\">We won the game.<\/h5>\n<p>It contains one independent clause and no dependent clauses.<\/p>\n<h3>Types of sentence structures<\/h3>\n<p>As you move up the ladder of complexity, you reach compound and complex sentences \u2014 sentences with dependent and independent clauses glued together with conjunctions and punctuation.<\/p>\n<p>This is where your fifth-grade teacher yammered:<\/p>\n<h5 class=\"standalone\">Blah blah blah compound verbs blah blah blah blah compound subjects blah blah basic sentences blah blah blah subordinate clauses blah blah only have one subject blah blah blah blah expresses a complete thought blah blah types of simple sentences blah blah blah<\/h5>\n<p>Let\u2019s skip all that, shall we? Instead, let\u2019s turn to Al Borowski, president of Priority Communication Skills Inc., who delivers my favorite reminder of the types of sentences structures:<\/p>\n<h5 class=\"standalone\">This is a simple sentence.<\/h5>\n<h5 class=\"standalone\">This is a compound sentence; it contains two independent clauses.<\/h5>\n<h5 class=\"standalone\">This is a complex sentence that contains one dependent clause and one independent clause.<\/h5>\n<h5 class=\"standalone\">This is a compound-complex sentence, and because it contains two independent clauses and a dependent clause, it becomes a long sentence.<\/h5>\n<p>Here are four ways to simplify your sentences:<\/p>\n<h3>1. Get to the verb faster.<\/h3>\n<p>Quick! Where\u2019s your verb?<\/p>\n<p>It should be near the front of your sentence, right after your subject. But here, the verb doesn\u2019t show up until 28 words in:<\/p>\n<div class=\"excerptbox\" style=\"border:solid 1px black;\">The Guardian Life Insurance Company of America (Guardian), one of the largest mutual life insurers and a leading provider of employee benefits for small and mid-sized companies, today <strong>announced<\/strong> that it will cover 100% of the cost associated with the administration of the H1N1 vaccine for employees\u00a0 and their eligible dependents enrolled in a fully-insured Guardian medical plan.<\/div>\n<p>Don\u2019t bury your verb under a long parenthetical phrase (let alone your whole boilerplate). Remember: You can always explain what your company is the leading provider of in a separate sentence.<\/p>\n<h3>2. Write \u2018low-depth\u2019 sentences.<\/h3>\n<p>That\u2019s an example of a high-depth sentence. Depth refers to the number of words before the verb in a sentence. High-depth sentences are harder to understand than low-depth sentences, found readability expert G. R. Klare in a 1976 review of 36 readability studies. The deeper the sentence \u2014 the more words before the verb \u2014 the lower the comprehension.<\/p>\n<p>Twenty-two words, for instance, delay the verb in this sentence:<\/p>\n<div class=\"excerptbox\" style=\"border:solid 1px black;\">Vital secrets of Britain\u2019s first atomic submarine, the Dreadnought, and, by implication, of the entire United States Navy\u2019s still-building nuclear\u00a0 sub fleet, <strong>were stolen<\/strong> by a London-based soviet spy ring, secret service agents testified today.<\/div>\n<h3>3. Force the verb to the front.<\/h3>\n<p>Here\u2019s a quick trick for forcing the verb toward the front of the sentence from Joseph M. Williams, author of <em>Style: Toward Clarity and Grace<\/em>:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRun a line under the first five or six words of every sentence. If you find that (1) you have to go more than six or seven words into a sentence to get past the subject to the verb and (2) the subject of the sentence is not one of your characters, take a hard look at that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Great advice.<\/p>\n<h3>4. Lean to the left.<\/h3>\n<p>Here\u2019s a trick for making even the longest sentence easier to read and understand: Write \u201cright-branching\u201d sentences. A right-branching sentence starts with the subject and verb, branching off into subordinate elements on the right.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf meaning is created by subject and verb, then a sentence that begins with subject and verb MAKES MEANING EARLY,\u201d writes Roy Peter Clark, vice president and senior scholar at The Poynter Institute\u2019s and author of Writing Tools.<\/p>\n<p>And that makes it easier to understand.<\/p>\n<p>Once you\u2019ve established meaning at the beginning \u2014 the \u201cleft side\u201d \u2014 of the sentence, you can branch out on the right side with \u201calmost limitless clauses\u201d and still remain understandable, Clark counsels.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s how it works, using a sentence from J.D. Salinger\u2019s 1945 <em>Esquire<\/em> short story, \u201cThis Sandwich Has No Mayonnaise\u201d:<\/p>\n<table class=\"pinktable\" style=\"background-color: #ffffff; width: 75%;\" border=\"1\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"3\">\n<tbody>\n<tr style=\"background-color: lightgrey;\">\n<td width=\"35%\">Make meaning on the left<\/td>\n<td width=\"40%\">Branch out on the right<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"35%\">Subject, verb<\/td>\n<td width=\"40%\">\u201calmost limitless clauses\u201d<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr style=\"background-color: lightgrey;\">\n<td width=\"35%\">\u201cI am<\/td>\n<td width=\"40%\">inside the truck, too, sitting on the protection strap, trying to keep out of the crazy Georgia rain, waiting for the lieutenant from Special Services, waiting to get tough.\u201d<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>That\u2019s a 30-word sentence. Under normal circumstances, it would achieve less than 50 percent comprehension, according to American Press Institute research. Yet it\u2019s perfectly understandable.
