Murrow and Peabody award-winning TV producer for ABC News.<\/p>\n<p>Make that editor.<\/p>\n<p>Make that both.<\/p>\n<p>Elisa, now a communications associate at World Education Services, wasn\u2019t alone doing double duty at ABC. In fact, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.indeed.com\/q-Preditor-jobs.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">many broadcasters now have two, two, TWO jobs in one<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s how reporters\u2019 lives have changed in the last few years:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Three in 10 journalists are gone<\/strong>. Employment has sunk 30% since 2002, according to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.journalism.org\/2015\/04\/29\/state-of-the-news-media-2015\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pew\u2019s \u201cState of the News Media\u201d study<\/a>. Now journalists look to their left, and there\u2019s nobody there. Fewer hands means more work for the remaining staff.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Their jobs are expanding<\/strong>. Nearly six in 10 journalists surveyed by PWR New Media have added web work to their existing responsibilities. They\u2019re not just reporting, they\u2019re also writing social media posts, producing the infographic and making the video.<\/li>\n<li><strong>There\u2019s no letting up<\/strong>. The news cycle? 24\/7. The news hole? Infinite.<\/li>\n<li><strong>It\u2019s tough out there<\/strong>. No wonder nearly seven out of 10 journalists believe their jobs have gotten harder over the past five years, according to a <a href=\"http:\/\/news.isebox.net\/press-releases\/2015-journalist-survey\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">survey by media platform ISEBOX<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This problem will only grow worse. I had lunch recently with a friend from <em>The New York Times<\/em>. Every day, he told me, he looks around at his colleagues and asks, \u201cHow can the <em>Times<\/em> afford to keep paying all of these salaries?\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>How can you help?<\/h3>\n<p>How can public relations professionals take advantage of \u2014 wait, I mean <em>help<\/em> \u2014 given this sad situation? (Hey, we can be preditory, too, right?)<\/p>\n<h4><strong>1. Write releases that are ready to be read.<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Half of the journalists in the ISEBOX study produce at least five articles a week. One in five produce more than 11 articles a week. A well-written press release can help these tired, busy professionals do their jobs better and more easily.<\/p>\n<p>But instead of the hierarchical blurtation of facts that makes up most releases, why not write a story? A real story, that\u2019s ready for publication. It takes great writing skills to write something your target audience wants to read, but it can be worth it.<\/p>\n<p>Best-case scenario: You\u2019ll convince a reporter that there\u2019s a story here, worthy of pursuing. Worst case: A busy journalist publishes the release as is.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe found official press releases often appear word for word in first accounts of events, though often not noted as such,\u201d according to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.journalism.org\/2010\/01\/11\/how-news-happens\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pew Internet &amp; American Life Project<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>2. Make it easy on the journalist (and the reader).<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Write a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wyliecomm.com\/2022\/06\/press-release-length\/\">one-minute release<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wyliecomm.com\/writing-tips\/micro-content\/\">Make it easy to scan with display copy<\/a>, such as subheads, bullets and bold-faced lead-ins. Produce finished, publication-worthy written communications.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>3.
