Write long tweets.<\/h3>\n<p>So you\u2019ve written your blog post, and now you want to get the word out on Twitter. How long should your tweet be? 190 characters? Longer than 140 characters?<\/p>\n<p>Turns out longer tweets get most engagements, according to an analysis by Sotrender and the <em>Chicago Tribune<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Why?<\/p>\n<p>Retweets, likes, replies, impressions, link clicks, and profile clicks increase with length. Use hashtags \u2026 but not too many.<\/h3>\n<p>What about hashtags? We\u2019ve all seen people tweet 140 characters to 280 on hashtags. Tweets with one or two hashtags get 21% higher engagement than those without, Buffer found. But engagement drops when you add more.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Make them short<\/strong>. <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.hootsuite.com\/ideal-social-media-post-length\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Keep them to 6 characters or less<\/a>, recommends Vanessa Doctor from Hashtags.org.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>3. Make tweets easy to read.<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hubspot.com\/hs-fs\/hub\/53\/file-13207809-pdf\/docs\/science-of-retweets-201003.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Retweets on average scored 6.47 on the Flesh-Kincaid Index<\/a>, according to Dan Zarrella, HubSpot\u2019s viral marketing scientist. He spent nine months analyzing 5 million tweets and 40 million retweets to find what makes some messages travel the world while others just stay home on the couch.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEasy-to-read posts are more liked, commented on, and shared on social media,\u201d according to a 2018 study published in the <em>Journal of Consumer Psychology<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>To make sure your tweets get retweeted, aim for 6th to 7th grade level on the Flesch test. Don\u2019t like your score? Reduce your grade level by reducing sentence length and word length.<\/p>\n<h3>4. Write simple sentences. Period.<\/h3>\n<p>Zarrella also found that retweets are heavier on nouns, proper nouns and third-person verbs than tweets in general. Keep words short.<\/h3>\n<p>Retweets actually have <em>more<\/em> syllables than ordinary tweets \u2014 1.62 syllables per word vs. 1.58, Zarrella found. Outside the Twitterverse, experts suggest aiming for two-syllable words, so both measures are still, understandably, simple.<\/p>\n<p>Want your tweets to spread? Write mostly in one- and two-syllable words.<\/p>\n<p>And skip the slang. Lazy language like <em>lol, gonna<\/em> and hey are among the 20 least retweetable words in the English language, Zarrella found.
