400? 200? <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shutterstock.com\/image-photo\/measuring-tape-9252256\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Image by Teresa Azevedo<\/em><\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>This according to the Nielsen Norman Group\u2019s 6 rounds of email newsletter usability studies conducted over 16 years.<\/p>\n<p>People spend just 51 seconds, on average, with an email newsletter after opening it, according to an NNG study.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe rule for web content is to keep it short,\u201d writes Jakob Nielsen, principal of the Nielsen Norman Group. \u201cThe rule for email content is to keep it ultra-short.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Why so short?<\/h3>\n<p>Why do people spend so little time with email newsletters?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Too many emails<\/strong>. Organizations and individuals send out <a href=\"https:\/\/www.formrush.com\/insights\/email-statistics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">347.3 billion emails a day<\/a>, according to Statista. That\u2019s a lot of competition for attention in the inbox. (And that doesn\u2019t include all of the email marketing pieces, blog posts and other content marketing pieces screaming for your readers\u2019 attention.)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Tiny screens<\/strong>. Around <a href=\"https:\/\/www.superoffice.com\/blog\/email-open-rates\/#:~:text=Today%2C%2081%25%20of%20all%20emails,and%20read%20on%20mobile%20devices\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">81% of people use a mobile app to open their emails<\/a>. And yet, Hubspot found that only 56% of companies have a marketing strategy to send mobile-friendly emails. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wyliecomm.com\/2017\/08\/5-obstacles-to-reading-on-smartphones\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"\">That\u2019s despite the fact that the tiny screen causes all kinds of usability problems<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Audience and sender sophistication<\/strong>. As email newsletters have become shorter, more visual and more scannable, subscribers have learned to expect more tightly edited e-zines.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The result? Readers want less.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUsers basically said that newsletters are bad if they take too much time or demand too much work of the user,\u201d Nielsen writes. \u201cNewsletters are good if they \u2026 are quick reads that do not feel frivolous.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So how long should email newsletters be?<\/p>\n<h3>How long should email newsletters be?<\/h3>\n<p>The short answer is, it depends.<\/p>\n<p>The longer answer requires math. But stick with me. It\u2019s worth it.<\/p>\n<p>People read about 200 words per minute. So <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wyliecomm.com\/writing-tips\/what-is-readability\/short-content\/best-length-for-a-blog-post\/\">figure Average Reading Time, or A.R.T.<\/a>, a concept created by The Poynter Institute\u2019s Roy Peter Clark.<\/p>\n<p>To figure A.R.T., multiply the number of minutes you think people will spend reading your message by 200 words per minute.
