His secret: extending the original metaphor the clich\u00e9 was based on:<\/p>\n<div class=\"excerptbox\" style=\"border:1px solid black;\">Scott Moser, the CEO of Equitas, summarized the transaction neatly: \u201cNames wanted to sleep easy at night, and we think we\u2019ve just bought them the world\u2019s best mattress.\u201d<\/div>\n<p>By extending the clich\u00e9 <em>sleep easy at night<\/em> with <em>mattress<\/em>, Buffett gives this tired phrase new life. (Back story: Berkshire reinsured Equitas so its \u201cnames,\u201d or underwriters, don\u2019t have to worry about huge claims bankrupting the firm and themselves):<\/p>\n<h3>Reinvent a cliche.<\/h3>\n<p>A.G. Edwards uses this technique in its \u201cnest egg\u201d ad series. The investment firm reinvents one of my least-favorite clich\u00e9s by making it visual and extending it as far as it can go. By doing so, you might just resurrect it.<\/p>\n<h3>Refresh a cliche.<\/h3>\n<p>You might also try refreshing a cliche. To refresh a cliche:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Circle all the clich\u00e9s<\/strong> in your message<\/li>\n<li><strong>Refresh them<\/strong> by writing a new ending<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Get inspiration from this list. If a group of first-graders can do it, imagine how engaging your \u201cnew clich\u00e9s\u201d will be.<\/p>\n<h3>More ways to revive a clich\u00e9<\/h3>\n<p>In a <em>Newsweek<\/em> article about new TV shows, Devin Gordon writes:<\/p>\n<h5 class=\"standalone\">It\u2019s dangerous to make broad generalizations about TV versus film without sounding like you\u2019re comparing apples and tubas, but let\u2019s do it anyway.<\/h5>\n<p>This technique is called \u201cTwist a cliche.\u201d To do that, sub out a traditional word in the clich\u00e9 for a new one.<\/p>\n<p>Instead of <em>dog tired<\/em>, for instance, ask, \u201cWho else is really tired? New mothers? People working double shifts? Hospital interns?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Here are four more ways to breathe new life into old, worn-out phrases:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Reverse a clich\u00e9<\/strong>. Replace a key word in the clich\u00e9 with one that means the opposite. One character on \u201cThe Closer,\u201d for instance, \u201ccompliments\u201d another on a eulogy: \u201cThere wasn\u2019t a wet eye in the house.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>Combine clich\u00e9s<\/strong>. Put two clich\u00e9s together to create a fresh phrase. Lyrics to one \u201cFlight of the Conchords\u201d song, for instance, go, \u201cThe fork in the road cuts like a knife.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>Flip a clich\u00e9<\/strong>. RevUpReadership.com member Connie Gotsch writes: \u201cHow about saying to someone, \u2018With enemies like you who needs friends?\u2019 I did that and the person did a double take and then fell over laughing.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>Twist a cliche<\/strong>. Go through the letters of the alphabet to change the word. Or rearrange the letters in the word. Or add an incorrect word or phrase.
