Tell a story.<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Heck, tell two stories. Why not make it three?<\/p>\n<p>Macdonald\u2019s 19 tweets compose three stories: the Jewish tailor story, the Chinese order-taker story and overarching the \u201cFunniest man in the world walks into a dressing room\u201d story. Robin Williams was his own secondary character.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>2. Serialize your story.<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Newspapers have been publishing serial narratives since a young reporter named Charles Dickens wrote the first one for London\u2019s Morning Chronicle in 1836.<\/p>\n<p>Serializing your story is a great way to make your tweets go further. But do it right:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Break it up<\/strong>. Macdonald sees his story as a series of scenes. That makes it easy for him to break it up into tweets.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Keep it together<\/strong>. You can repeat the main headline, add Part I and Part II or use words like \u201ctherefore,\u201d \u201ccontinued\u201d and \u201cupdate\u201d to signal that these tweets have something in common. Macdonald uses the hashtag #RIPRobinWilliams to organize individual <strong>tweets into a complete story<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Post<\/strong> in reverse order so readers see the \u201cfirst\u201d tweet first in your stream. Macdonald tweeted in order, which means followers must read this Twitter tale backward.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><strong>3. Start strong.<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>The most compelling stories have one strong summary sentence close to the beginning, Catherine Burns, artistic director of the Moth, a New York City-based organization dedicated to storytelling, tells <em>Real Simple<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u2018I fell into the pool in my wedding dress,\u2019 say, or \u2018A violent stomachache ruined our first date.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Macdonald\u2019s lead strikes the same chord: \u201cIt was my first stand-up appearance on Letterman, and I had to follow the funniest man in the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Notice that Macdonald saves the background section for after he gets your attention: \u201cI was a punk kid from rural Ontario and I was in my dressing room, terrified.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4><strong>4. Keep it short.<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>All three of Macdonald\u2019s stories together weigh in at less than 350 words, give or take a few hashtags.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>5. But don\u2019t compress the life out of it.<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Notice that Macdonald didn\u2019t lose details when he tightened his tale into tweets. Regardless of how tight the space, Macdonald keeps our attention with concrete details like:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>He was a Jewish tailor, taking my measurements.<\/li>\n<li>He went down on his knees, asked which way I dressed.<\/li>\n<li>The place was out of Moo Shoo Pork \u2026<\/li>\n<li>\u2026 he ended with a Windsor knot.<\/li>\n<li>He spoke mostly Yiddish \u2026<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><strong>6. Know when to quit.<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Endings are as important as openings. Macdonald finished his story, though, a tweet before he stopped typing.<\/p>\n<p>Notice the many ways that the final tweet does not work with the rest of this piece:<\/p>\n<p>It adds emotion to observation. Tell the story you\u2019ve observed, then let readers have the emotional response. This rule is also known as, \u201cMake the reader cry; don\u2019t tell the reader you cried.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHave you ever noticed,\u201d asks a character in Richard Yates\u2019 <em>Young Hearts Crying<\/em>, \u201chow your sympathy for someone\u2019s story \u2014 anyone\u2019s story \u2014 tends to evaporate when they get to the part about how long and hard they cried?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s what happened to me when I read Macdonald\u2019s last tweet.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>It\u2019s long<\/strong>. Most of the words in Macdonald\u2019s tweets are one \u2014 maybe two \u2014 syllables long. Other than Ontario, though, \u201cunacceptable\u201d is the only word in this Twitter tale that\u2019s four syllables long.<\/li>\n<li><strong>It\u2019s abstract<\/strong>. As William Carlos Williams counseled, \u201cTurn ideas into things.\u201d Macdonald\u2019s ending does the reverse: In a series of concrete words, this is the rare abstract one.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The true ending of this story is \u201cUntil now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When you finish your story, stop typing.<\/p>\n<h3>Resources on serializing your story<\/h3>\n<p>Here are more examples and techniques for breaking your narrative into successive \u2014 and successful \u2014 parts.<\/p>\n<h4>Roy Peter Clark\u2019s serials<\/h4>\n<p>The editorial guru of The Poynter Institute is a serial master. Among his serial narratives<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tampabay.com\/archive\/2021\/11\/30\/three-little-words-archive-links\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Three Little Words<\/strong><\/a>\u201d appeared in the <em>St. Petersburg Times<\/em> for 29 consecutive days in 1996. It told the story of a woman, Jane Morse, whose husband died of AIDS.<\/li>\n<li>\u201c<strong>Sadie\u2019s Ring<\/strong>\u201d was published in five newspapers in 1996 and 1997. This 11-part series tells Clark\u2019s personal story of growing up Catholic with a Protestant father and a Jewish grandmother.<\/li>\n<li>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.goupstate.com\/news\/19990321\/ain39t-done-yet-a-newspaper-novel-about-the-so-called-end-of-the-world\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Ain\u2019t Done Yet<\/strong><\/a>\u201d appeared as a millennium special in 25 newspapers. This newspaper novel ran for 29 consecutive days.<\/li>\n<li>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.poynter.org\/archive\/2002\/her-picture-in-my-wallet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Her Picture in My Wallet<\/strong><\/a>\u201d is a two-part piece about a World War II veteran reunited with his first love after years of separation and regret.
