Tell a joke.<\/h3>\n<p>When I first joined the National Speakers Association, jokes had a terrible name:<\/p>\n<h5 class=\"standalone\">Jokes are old-fashioned, simple and lame.<\/h5>\n<h5 class=\"standalone\">They sound like they came from a joke book.<\/h5>\n<h5 class=\"standalone\">You run the risk that your audience has heard them before, making you appear to be stealing old humor.<\/h5>\n<h5 class=\"standalone\">Only original observational humor, in the form of personal stories, will do.<\/h5>\n<p>But seriously, folks, jokes \u2014 even old jokes \u2014 can help you make a point.<\/p>\n<p>So how can you use jokes without looking lame?<\/p>\n<p>Hook and hinge, suggests Sam Horn, author of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/0399532765\/wwwwyliecomco-20\/002-0054577-9872826?creative=327641&amp;camp=14573&amp;adid=0J5YDTT1GMJYJC42CQ4C&amp;link_code=as1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>POP! Stand Out In Any Crowd<\/em><\/a>. \u201cThe joke hooks people\u2019s interest, and then you hinge the punch line onto how it\u2019s relevant to your point,\u201d she writes.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s how it works, in a speech by former Sprint CEO William T. Esrey at a telecom conference:<\/p>\n<h4><strong>1. Expected direction:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<div class=\"excerptbox\" style=\"border:1px solid black;\">A first-time computer buyer \u2026 set up his new computer, connected all the wires, and when he turned it on so he could start surfing the web, got nothing. Not even a blip on the screen. After checking and rechecking connections, he called an experienced friend who finally discovered the problem.<\/div>\n<h4><strong>2. Unexpected turn\/hook:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<div class=\"excerptbox\" style=\"border:1px solid black;\">The computer novice had plugged the surge protector back into itself instead of into the wall socket.<\/div>\n<h4><strong>3. Hinge to the point:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<div class=\"excerptbox\" style=\"border:1px solid black;\">No matter what level of sophistication you\u2019re on, it can be embarrassing and costly to think you\u2019re plugged into the most important trends and opportunities, when actually you are not. In other words, we must be careful not to get plugged into our own surge protectors. So we come to events like this one in the hopes that we will see the future first.<\/div>\n<h4><strong>4. State your point:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<div class=\"excerptbox\" style=\"border:1px solid black;\">Although the future is really anyone\u2019s guess, today, I\u2019d like to give you my opinion of what\u2019s about to happen, especially with telecom networks.<\/div>\n<p>Because you\u2019re using the joke to make a point and not just to entertain, readers and other audience members will forgive you for being more amusing than hilarious.<\/p>\n<p>And if the joke has been around for awhile? Introduce it as an old joke. Then your readers will know you know. And you\u2019ll all be in on the joke.<\/p>\n<h3>3. Twist a list.<\/h3>\n<p>A <em>New Yorker<\/em> cartoon shows pirates making three sailors walk the plank. \u201cYou\u2019re right,\u201d one of the pirates says. \u201cThings are funnier in threes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Stuck for humor? Try a series of three or more items. Series allow you to surprise and amuse your reader by breaking the pattern.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1. Twist a list<\/strong>. One way to use a series for humor is to twist a list. That is:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Set your list up with two or more serious items.<\/li>\n<li>Break the pattern with a funny final item \u2014 aka your punchline.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Stephen Colbert used this approach on a recent episode of \u201cThe Colbert Report\u201d when he compared:<\/p>\n<div class=\"excerptbox\" style=\"border:1px solid black;\">\n<ul>\n<li>Christianity<\/li>\n<li>Islam<\/li>\n<li>Hinduism<\/li>\n<li>Buddhism<\/li>\n<li>The Toyota Camry<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p>What funny thing could you add to a list of serious items to twist a list in your next piece?<\/p>\n<p><strong>2. Make a list<\/strong>. In \u201cThree Things,\u201d his copyediting e-zine for Entergy employees, Chris Smith always starts with a <a href=\"https:\/\/revvingupreadership.com\/2021\/03\/how-to-write-a-rhetorical-triad\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">triad<\/a> quote. One of my favorites:<\/p>\n<h5>\u201cIrish coffee contains the three major food groups: alcohol, caffeine and sugar.\u201d<\/h5>\n<h6>\u2014 Michael Eck, on The Book of Threes website<\/h6>\n<p>Then Smith takes off from that triad to build a list of three tips:<\/p>\n<div class=\"excerptbox\" style=\"border:1px solid black;\">\n<ul>\n<li>Alcohol notwithstanding, don\u2019t be negative, be appositive. \u2026<\/li>\n<li>If, like nearly everyone, you often must revise or edit with sufficient caffeine but insufficient time, consider these fast-editing gems from Carl Sessions Stepp \u2026<\/li>\n<li>Sugar and spice and filenames are nice. \u2026<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>3. Count off a list<\/strong>. In a restaurant, I once overheard a diner say:<\/p>\n<h5 class=\"standalone\">\u201cThe six most beautiful words in the English language: \u2018I\u2019ll have the rack of lamb.\u2019\u201d<\/h5>\n<p>Yesterday I tweeted:<\/p>\n<h5 class=\"standalone\">The five words you never want to hear your new yoga teacher say: \u2018Plank is my favorite pose.\u201d<\/h5>\n<p>What are the nicest (or worst) words in your organization?<\/p>\n<h5 class=\"standalone\">Tax season is over?<\/h5>\n<h5 class=\"standalone\">Budgets are due Monday?<\/h5>\n<p>Use \u201cthe X most X words in the English language\u201d setup to add a little humor to your next piece.<\/p>\n<p><strong>4. Extend a list<\/strong>. You can also find humor in a series by extending someone else\u2019s list. In <em>Eat the Rich<\/em>, P.J. O\u2019Rourke extended a quote by Winston Churchill:<\/p>\n<h5 class=\"standalone\">\u201cRussia is a riddle wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma, tied in a hankie, rolled in a blanket and packed in a box full of little Styrofoam peanuts,\u201d said Winston Churchill, or something like that.<\/h5>\n<p>Got a series?
