Use a numbered or bulleted list when you want to:<\/p>\n<h3>1. Get attention.<\/h3>\n<p>People can\u2019t resist a list.<\/p>\n<p>Lists \u201care to the web reader\u2019s eye what Brad Pitt is to the paparazzi,\u201d say Kara Pernice, Kathryn Whitenton and Jakob Nielsen, the authors of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nngroup.com\/reports\/how-people-read-web-eyetracking-evidence\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>How People Read on the Web<\/em><\/a>. \u201cYou just can\u2019t get enough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s because lists make skimmers\u2019 jobs easier and draw the eye. Indeed, according to Pernice et al., web visitors look at 70% of the bulleted lists they encounter.<\/p>\n<p>As a result, lists and other \u201cunconventional\u201d approaches (including Q&amp;As, timelines and short sidebars) get 15% more attention than the average story, according to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0979868505?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=wwwwyliecomco-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=0979868505\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Poynter Institute\u2019s Eyetrack07 study<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>2. Give journalists what they want.<\/h3>\n<p><em>Why make us work so hard?<\/em> kvetch journalists surveyed for a study by Greentarget.<\/p>\n<p>These folks are frustrated that they\u2019re too often forced to hunt through long rivers of gray text to find the news. No wonder more than half of them said they&#8217;d find it helpful to have a bulleted list of key facts in a release. And more than one-third more were open to the idea.<\/p>\n<p>So give reporters what they want: Add bullets. While you&#8217;re at it, why not add subheads, bold-faced lead-ins, callouts and other display copy to make it easy for reporters and others to scan your release?<\/p>\n<h3>3. Reach nonreaders with words.<\/h3>\n<p>Good lists lift ideas off the page for skimmers and scanners.<\/p>\n<p>Web visitors \u201chave come to realize that bulleted lists do some of the work for them,\u201d write Pernice et al., \u201cso they don\u2019t have to read as much text to get the main idea.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>4. Make messages easier to understand.<\/h3>\n<p>Readers also understand lists better than conventional articles, according to Eyetrack07.<\/p>\n<h3>5. Get remembered.<\/h3>\n<p>And readers remember lists longer than conventional articles, according to Eyetrack07.<\/p>\n<p>That may be because humans process information spatially. Leave your grocery list at home, for instance, and you\u2019ll probably still remember most of its items, because you recall where they were located on the list.<\/p>\n<p>So your readers won\u2019t forget: Please remember, write a list.<\/p>\n<h3>6. Cut Through the Clutter.<\/h3>\n<p>Bulleted lists help you:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Break up full sentences to make them easier to read and understand.<\/li>\n<li>Make paragraphs look easier to read so more people read them.<\/li>\n<li>Write more concisely, because they eliminate the need for transitions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Bottom line: If you have a series of three or more items in a sentence or paragraph, make it a list. If you find that your article has become a list of lists, you need more stories, examples, exposition and other types of information.<\/p>\n<p>Lists grab attention, but lists of lists \u2014 and, worse, multilevel lists \u2014 can be tedious and exhausting. No wonder Pernice, et. al, found that people pay less attention to each subsequent list on a webpage.<\/p>\n<h3>When to use a bulleted list<\/h3>\n<p>What is the purpose of a bulleted list?
