Or they get printed on business cards, laminated, stuck in a wallet and forgotten.<\/p>\n<p>In other words, they die.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Don\u2019t bury your values and vision.<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>A couple of years ago, one of my favorite communicators drew a blank when \u201ctested\u201d on his company\u2019s mission statement in an all-hands meeting. Instead of the mission, he turned in the only passage he\u2019s ever memorized \u2014 Hamlet\u2019s soliloquy.<\/p>\n<p>The kicker: My friend was on the team that crafted the mission statement.<\/p>\n<p>One problem is that abstract principles like the mission, vision and values are hard to get your arms around. \u201cThinking skills\u201d and \u201cpersonal flexibility,\u201d for instance, make for pretty broad and boring copy.<\/p>\n<p>Another problem is that employees don\u2019t buy vague, abstract messages that they don\u2019t see in action. That makes your guiding principles easy to ridicule.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>\u2018Beliefs we share\u2019?<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>This would never, ever happen at your company, of course, but TJ and Sandar Larkin report that at one organization, employees found the values statement \u201cBeliefs We Share\u201d to be so insincere, they referred to it instead as \u201cBullshit We Share.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And at another company, employees transformed the slogan \u201cThe Power of One\u201d into a mocking, Star Trek-style salute.<\/p>\n<p>To breathe life into your organization\u2019s guiding principles \u2014 and to avoid flat-out mockery \u2014 show, don\u2019t tell. Instead of crafting slogans, find real employees to demonstrate your guiding principles in action.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Illustrate core competencies.<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>That\u2019s what communicator Brenda Zanin did when she wanted to illustrate the Royal Canadian Mounted Police\u2019s eight core competencies. She sought employees who translated those principles into action.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe felt members and employees might get a better appreciation for the competencies by seeing how they applied in people\u2019s lives,\u201d says Zanin, editor of Pony Express, the RCMP\u2019s national employee communication channel.<\/p>\n<p>After all, she writes, the organization\u2019s worldwide reputation \u201cis built one person at a time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Indeed.<\/p>\n<p>Zanin and her team knew some of the subjects they used to illustrate the organization\u2019s values. Others they got through old-fashioned legwork \u2014 by calling her contacts and asking them for good candidates.<\/p>\n<p>Among other employees to illustrate the competencies, she found:<\/p>\n<table class=\"pinktable\" style=\"background-color: #ffffff;\" border=\"1\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"3\">\n<tbody>\n<tr style=\"background-color: lightgrey;\">\n<td style=\"font-weight:bold;\">Employee \u2026<\/td>\n<td style=\"font-weight:bold;\">\u2026 to illustrate<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>A forensic toxicologist who devised a new method of screening for drugs in blood samples<\/td>\n<td>Thinking skills<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr style=\"background-color: lightgrey;\">\n<td>The sergeant in charge of coordinating media response after the Swissair Flight 111 crash in September 1998<\/td>\n<td>Communication<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>An officer who returned to work after losing her right leg in a shooting<\/td>\n<td>Personal effectiveness and flexibility<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>Need to communicate broad concepts like core competencies? That\u2019s much more accessible and less patronizing than one more \u201cThou shalt not\u201d story.<\/p>\n<p>Reiterating rules to employees? Make sure your employees are in on the message. Use employees to illustrate your policies.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Let people stand for protocols.<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>When Sharon Weinfeld, a communications strategist for the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses, announced that a team of member nurses had decreased health care-related infections, she could have tersely delivered the news:<\/p>\n<div class=\"excerptbox\" style=\"border:1px solid black;\">Teams of bedside nurses from four New York City hospitals significantly reduced two healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) \u2014 central line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSIs) and catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs).<\/div>\n<p>Instead, she brought the news story to life by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wyliecomm.com\/writing-tips\/how-to-write-creative-content\/human-interest-stories\/\">writing a good human-interest story<\/a>:<\/p>\n<div class=\"excerptbox\" style=\"border:1px solid black;\">New York City critical care nurse Katie Winkler winces, teeth clenched and body rigid, as she recalls the hellish ordeal of Charlie, one of her patients last year.<\/p>\n<p>Already immobilized, breathing only with the help of a ventilator and on a regimen of hourly IV meds as a result of a brain aneurism, Charlie contracted an excruciating and life-threatening catheter-associated urinary tract infection (CAUTI).<\/p>\n<p>For critically ill patients fighting for their lives, another infection is the last thing they need \u2014 and may be the last thing they experience on this earth.
