Use more lists.<\/h3>\n<p>Review your site for places where a bulleted list would help visitors skim more easily. Then substitute lists for prose.<\/p>\n<h3>2. Organize lists logically.<\/h3>\n<p>Choose the right structure:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Alphabetical structure<\/strong> is best for glossaries, for instance.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Chronological structure<\/strong> is the right choice for a series of steps. [As everyone who\u2019s ever put together an Ikea bedside table well knows.]<\/li>\n<li><strong>Hierarchical structure<\/strong> works best for top 10 lists.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>However, you\u2019ll also want to \u2026<\/p>\n<h3>3. Take advantage of the last item on the list.<\/h3>\n<p>The last element on a list often attracts more attention, says\u00a0usability expert Jakob Nielsen:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>The first few items<\/strong> get the most attention.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The middle items<\/strong> get less attention.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The final item<\/strong> gets more attention than the one before it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The serial item on a list may also benefit from the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Serial_position_effect#Recency_effect\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">recency effect<\/a>. This principle, coined by Hermann Ebbinghaus, says that items presented last will most likely be remembered best.<\/p>\n<p>So if you\u2019re creating a hierarchical list, consider an hourglass-shaped structure: Start with the most important items, bury the least important items in the middle, then end with the second- or third-most important item.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/revvingupreadership.com\/2022\/05\/how-to-write-a-listicle\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Get more tips on organizing your list<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>4. Lead with the verb.<\/h3>\n<p>Do you have a list of instructions? Take a tip from my friends at LeasePlanUSA and lead with the verb:<\/p>\n<p>Here are some tips for saving for the future.<\/p>\n<p>This approach will help you \u2026<\/p>\n<h3>5. Add a subhead to let readers know the topic of the list.<\/h3>\n<p>Visitors are looking for it, write Pernice, et al., authors of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nngroup.com\/reports\/how-people-read-web-eyetracking-evidence\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>How People Read on the Web: The Eyetracking Evidence<\/em><\/a>. \u201cThe eyes go almost instantly to the bulleted list, only stopping first to scan the bolded text above it.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>6. Make lists parallel.<\/h3>\n<p>One of the items on the LeasePlanUSA tipsheet is not like the others:<\/p>\n<p>To keep your lists parallel, set up an intro line that says something like \u201cTo save for the future \u2026\u201d Then in your head, include that line before each bold-faced lead-in:<\/p>\n<div class=\"excerptbox\" style=\"border:1px solid black;\">\n<ul>\n<li>[To save for the future,] <strong>Join<\/strong> \u2026<\/li>\n<li>[To save for the future,] <strong>The tricky balance <\/strong>of paying off debt and saving for the future \u2026<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p>The first item works fine. The second does not. The fix? Rewrite to put the verb first:<\/p>\n<div class=\"excerptbox\" style=\"border:1px solid black;\">\n<ul>\n<li>[To save for the future,] <strong>Balance<\/strong> paying off debt and saving for the future \u2026<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<h3>7. Don\u2019t drop the bullets.<\/h3>\n<p>\u201cThe little dot on the left is an appealing element which immediately indicates that the item is a list,\u201d Pernice, et al., write. Indeed, while people look at 70% of the lists with bullets they encounter, they look at only 55% of lists without bullets.<\/p>\n<p>Get more tips on formatting your list.<\/p>\n<h3>8. Don\u2019t repeat words.<\/h3>\n<p>Web visitors often bypass the first words in lists when they\u2019re repeated. Reading the same thing over and over is a drag, and bypassing itself is a cognitive burden. Rewrite to avoid repetition.<\/p>\n<h3>9. Keep lists short.<\/h3>\n<p>Make them too long, and visitors will skim them in the F-shaped eye-gazing pattern.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wyliecomm.com\/2022\/05\/how-long-to-make-listicles\/\">Get more tips on the length of your list<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>10. Make list items short.<\/h3>\n<p>\u201cThese are called \u2018bulleted lists\u2019 and not \u2018bulleted paragraphs\u2019 for a reason,\u201d Pernice, et al., write. \u201cSticking a bullet in front of a paragraph is no good.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>11. Punctuate.<\/h3>\n<p>If yours is a list of sentences, add a period to the end of each. Otherwise, skip the punctuation.
