Countless thousands of patients suffer the tortures of cancer, angina pectoris and other distressing diseases while their physicians are helpless to relieve them.<\/p>\n<p>A big step toward help for these sufferers is now being made with a treatment known as nerve-blocking. This treatment, which consists of putting a \u201cblock\u201d between the source of pain and the brain, is not a new therapy. But its potentialities are just now being realized. \u2026<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u2026 to this one, from <em>The New Yorker<\/em>:<\/p>\n<div class=\"excerptbox\" style=\"border:1px solid black;\">Recently, [Rovenstine] devoted a few minutes to relieving a free patient in Bellevue of a pain in an arm that had been cut off several years before. The victim of this phantom pain said that the tendons ached and that his fingers were clenched so hard he could feel his nails digging into his palm.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Rovenstine\u2019s assistant, Dr. E. M. Papper, reminded Rovenstine that a hundred and fifty years ago the cure would have been to dig up the man\u2019s arm, if its burial place was known, and straighten out the hand. Rovenstine smiled\u2026 .<\/p><\/div>\n<h3>Human interest is easier to read.<\/h3>\n<p>According to a measurement tool by readability expert Rudolph Flesch, <em>The New Yorker<\/em> article is easier to read:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>The New Yorker\u2019s<\/em> 18-word sentences and 1.45-syllable words, on average, give it a <strong>Flesch Reading Ease score of 66<\/strong>. That is very easy to read.<\/li>\n<li><em>Life\u2019s<\/em> 22-word sentences and 1.65-syllable words, on average, give it a <strong>Flesch Reading Ease score of 46<\/strong>. That means it\u2019s 20 points harder to read.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>And the second passage is also measurably more interesting:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>The <em>Life<\/em> article<\/strong> had zero personal words and only 11 personal sentences per 290 words. That gave it a human interest score of 7, or <strong>dull<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The <em>New Yorker<\/em> piece<\/strong> had 11 personal words and 41 personal sentences. That gave it a human interest score of 53, which made it <strong>highly interesting<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>No wonder news reporters rely on good human-interest stories for their news stories. Want to raise awareness for your product, program or policy? Write stories about a real-life person, group of people or other humans.<\/p>\n<h3>How to measure human interest.<\/h3>\n<p>Rudolph Flesch is famous for developing the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wyliecomm.com\/2021\/11\/measure-reading-levels-with-readability-indexes\/\">Flesch Reading Ease<\/a>, one of the most popular and widely used readability tests. It uses word length and sentence length to measure how easy your copy is to read.<\/p>\n<p>Less famously, Flesch also created a formula for measuring \u201chuman interest\u201d in your copy. It uses references to people and conversational language to measure how interesting your copy is to read. And interesting copy, Flesch said, is more readable.<\/p>\n<h5>\u201cIt seems hardly necessary to prove the importance of human interest \u2026 People are most interested in other people.\u201d<\/h5>\n<h6>\u2014 Rudolph Flesch, creator of the Flesch Reading Ease formula<\/h6>\n<p>\u201cThe structural shortcoming of the [Flesch Reading Ease] formula is the fact that it does not always show the high readability of direct, conversational writing,\u201d Flesch wrote in \u201cA New Readability Yardstick.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So how interesting is your copy?<\/p>\n<h3>Run the human interest test on your copy.<\/h3>\n<p>To find your human interest score:<\/p>\n<p><strong>1. Count personal words<\/strong>. They include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Nouns with natural gender<\/strong>, such as <em>mother, father, Frank<\/em> and <em>Opal<\/em><\/li>\n<li><strong>Pronouns except for neuter pronouns<\/strong> \u2014 <em>he<\/em> and <em>she<\/em>, for instance, but not <em>it<\/em><\/li>\n<li><strong>The words people<\/strong> (used with the plural verb) and <em>folks<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>2. Count personal sentences<\/strong>. These test how interesting and conversational the copy is. Count:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Quotations<\/strong>, whether marked by quotation marks or not<\/li>\n<li><strong>Imperative sentences<\/strong>, or those addressed to the reader, including questions, commands and requests<\/li>\n<li><strong>Exclamations<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Grammatically incomplete sentences<\/strong> whose meaning the reader must infer from the context<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>3. Do the math<\/strong>. Figure this formula:<\/p>\n<h5 class=\"standalone\">3.635 x % of personal words<br \/>\n+ 314 x % of personal sentences<br \/>\n= human interest score<\/h5>\n<p><strong>4. Rate your message<\/strong>. Your score will fall between 0 (no human interest) and 100 (full of human interest). If you score:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>0 to 10<\/strong>: your message is <strong>dull<\/strong>, like a scientific journals.<\/li>\n<li><strong>10 to 20<\/strong>: your message is <strong>mildly interesting<\/strong>, like business-to-business publications.<\/li>\n<li><strong>20 to 40<\/strong>: your message is <strong>interesting<\/strong>, like <em>Reader\u2019s Digest<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>40 to 60<\/strong>: your message is <strong>highly interesting<\/strong>, like <em>The New Yorker<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>40 to 100<\/strong>: your message is <strong>dramatic<\/strong>, like fiction.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>To increase your score, increase the number of personal words and personal sentences.<\/p>\n<h3>Increase readership with human interest.<\/h3>\n<p>Flesch earned his Ph.D. in educational research for \u201cMarks of a Readable Style,\u201d a dissertation that included early reading ease and interest formulas.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPublishers quickly discovered that Flesch\u2019s formula could increase readership by 40 to 60%,\u201d writes William H.
