But how can you use the same approaches to make your content marketing messages travel the world, while others just languish on the couch?<\/p>\n<p>Write a blog post that\u2019s positive and emotional, suggest Jonah Berger and Katherine L. Milkman, two professors at the University of Pennsylvania.<\/p>\n<h3>Make messages positive, emotional.<\/h3>\n<p>Together, Berger and Milkman reviewed some 7,000 articles that appeared in <em>The New York Times<\/em> to determine what distinguished pieces that made the most-mailed list.<\/p>\n<p>After controlling for placement, timing, author popularity and gender, and story length and complexity, they found that two features determined an article\u2019s success:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>How positive its message was<\/strong>. Positive messages are more viral than negative ones.<\/li>\n<li><strong>How much emotion it incites<\/strong>. The more extreme the emotion, the more likely it is to move people to act. He found that negative remarks \u2014 references to sadness and aggression, negative emotions and feelings, and morbid comments \u2014 correlate with fewer followers. (What a shock!)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs it turns out, nobody likes to follow a Debbie Downer,\u201d Zarrella writes. \u201cAccounts with lots of followers don\u2019t tend to make many negative remarks.
