Instead, he said, they are now \u201cdermatological graphics.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Of course you don\u2019t, Mr. Teerlink.<\/p>\n<p>Just like we don\u2019t call it a company, talking, hiring consultants or coming up with ideas any more. Now they\u2019re the enterprise, interfacing, utilizing change agents and ideation.<\/p>\n<p>Jargon. Buzzwords. Acronyms. They\u2019re things that make your reader go \u201chuh?\u201d And we need to get them out of our message.<\/p>\n<p>Here are just a few ways jargon affects communication. Jargon:<\/p>\n<h3>1. But isn\u2019t it your job to translate jargon so your reader doesn\u2019t have to?<\/p>\n<h3>2. Makes ideas harder to \u201csee.\u201d<\/h3>\n<p>We say \u201cI see\u201d to mean \u201cI understand.\u201d Help readers \u201csee\u201d your point by translating jargon into visual language.<\/p>\n<p>We see a tattoo, for instance. We don\u2019t see a \u201cdermatalogical graphic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Poet William Carlos Williams counseled writers to \u201cturn ideas into things.\u201d Jargon turns things into a wall of words.<\/p>\n<h3>3.
