J. and Sandar Larkin.<\/p>\n<p>We say \u201chemorrhage\u201d; they say \u201cbleeding.\u201d We say \u201csutures\u201d; they say \u201cstitches.\u201d We say \u201cmetastasize\u201d; they say, \u201cthe cancer is spreading.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Searchers use the \u201cwrong\u201d medical term 59% of the time when researching health issues on the web, according to a study by Alexa T. McCray, et al. In fact, more than three-quarters of Americans didn\u2019t know that \u201chemorrhage\u201d meant \u201cbleeding,\u201d according to a study by E.B. Learner, et al. He writes:<\/p>\n<div class=\"excerptbox\" style=\"border:1px solid black;\">From time to time, I am cruelly slandered by members of the public relations industry, who accuse me of writing unfairly about their profession. Nothing could be further from the truth. I love PR professionals. They\u2019re a hoot, because they are such pathetic, desperate dillweeds.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am right now looking at something called <em>Your Market Wire Newsletter<\/em>, a package of financial \u2018news\u2019 that arrives, unbidden, in journalists\u2019 inboxes every week. It is filled with incomprehensibly written press releases on subjects of even less interest than can be found in a non-interest-bearing fiduciary debenture with negative yield.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s exactly how these releases read, only they are less scintillating and more crammed with jargon. One word never suffices when 16 can do the job; big, important-sounding words are better than small, clear ones.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPlans are \u2018initiatives.\u2019 They are not begun; they are \u2018implemented.\u2019 These releases could sedate an enraged rhinoceros.<\/p><\/div>\n<h3>3. Cuts back on friends, fans and followers.<\/h3>\n<p>Facebook users don\u2019t like jargon and buzzwords, according to viral marketing scientist Dan Zarrella.
