However, I was able to use only one, because at 100 to 200 words, each sucked up 20% to 40% of my word count.<\/p>\n<p>That doesn\u2019t make sense at all.<\/p>\n<p>So how long should your quotes be? Keep them to:<\/p>\n<h3>1. 20 words or less, plus attribution<\/h3>\n<p>Twenty words is the average length of a quote in one issue of <em>The New York Times<\/em>, which Wylie Communications analyzed a couple of years ago. (We skipped the sports pages.)<\/p>\n<p>We found that, excluding attribution, <em>The New York Times\u2019<\/em>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Average length<\/strong> of a quote was 19 to 20 words.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Median length<\/strong> was 18 words.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Most common length<\/strong>, with 22 examples in one day, was 7 words.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Can you write like the <em>Times<\/em>? Here\u2019s what quotes of this length look like:<\/p>\n<p>20 words:<\/p>\n<h5 class=\"standalone\">\u201cAn officer can gain no Fourth Amendment advantage,\u201d the chief justice wrote, \u201cthrough a sloppy study of the laws he is duty-bound to enforce.\u201d<\/h5>\n<p>18 words:<\/p>\n<h5 class=\"standalone\">\u201cHe knew he was deserting the Army and would be charged, but killing himself was a bigger sin,\u201d said Brig. Gen. Stephen Xenakis, a retired Army psychiatrist who testified for the defense during the sentencing phase of the trial.<\/h5>\n<p>7 words:<\/p>\n<h5 class=\"standalone\">\u201cYou can predict behavior you can\u2019t observe,\u201d said Aleksander Obabko, a computational engineer at Argonne.<\/h5>\n<p>As long as you\u2019re writing like the <em>Times<\/em>, why not target the news giant\u2019s 7-word most-common length instead of its 20-word average?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pro tip:<\/strong> Benchmark your preferred media outlets. How long are their quotes? How long are yours?<\/p>\n<h3>2. Even better: Make it 1 sentence.<\/h3>\n<p>Did I say 1-2-3? Let\u2019s make it 1.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeel back the quote to one great sentence,\u201d suggests Jacqui Banaszynski, associate managing editor at <em>The Seattle Times<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Carving out the most provocative sentence alone can make your quote more interesting. First, highlight the most interesting parts of the quote<\/strong>. Digging through all of the chest-pounding and self-adulation, I find this promising phrase:<\/p>\n<h5 class=\"standalone\">\u201c\u2026 street performance enthusiasts, hot rodders and racers \u2026\u201d<\/h5>\n<p><strong>2. Now peel it back to one great sentence<\/strong>. If there\u2019s nothing to interest readers in the quote, you might have to go out and dig up more details. Note that I\u2019ve left a spot here for reader benefits:<\/p>\n<h5 class=\"standalone\">\u201cHot rodders, racers and other street performance enthusiasts will now be able to do [XX] better, thanks to our merger,\u201d Callahan says.<\/h5>\n<p><strong>Pro tip:<\/strong> Take the one-sentence-quote pledge: Try limiting your quotes to a single sentence for the next month, and watch your sound bites become tighter and more interesting.<\/p>\n<h3>Shorter\u2019s better.<\/h3>\n<p>Why so short?<\/p>\n<p>Because short quotes sound better. They\u2019re easier to read and understand.
