That\u2019s the second step of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wyliecomm.com\/writing-tips\/writing-process\/effective-writing-process\/\">writing process<\/a>: freewriting.<\/p>\n<p>Only forget that kind of writing where you:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Hunt for the right word.<\/li>\n<li>Peck it out.<\/li>\n<li>Shuffle through notes looking for a quote.<\/li>\n<li>Head to the vending machines for the third time in 15 minutes, hoping that when you come back you might \u2014 just might \u2014 think of something to say.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Nothing gets words on paper faster or gives your writing more personality than freewriting.<\/p>\n<p>Freewriting is based on the idea that our brains are divided into two parts:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The logical left side. It thinks analytically, making sure you don\u2019t end your sentences in prepositions or use a colon when only a semicolon will do.<\/li>\n<li>The creative right side. It\u2019s impulsive and unconventional and gives your copy interest and energy.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Problem is, we weren\u2019t taught how to use the right side of our brains to write. Instead, we focus on AP style, punctuation and spelling \u2014 editing.<\/p>\n<p>Freewriting momentarily gets rid of the brain\u2019s logical left side so you can tap its creative right side.<\/p>\n<h3>How a writer writes<\/h3>\n<p>So after you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wyliecomm.com\/writing-tips\/writing-process\/effective-writing-process\/prewriting\/\">prewrite<\/a> and take a break:<\/p>\n<h3>1. Divide and conquer.<\/h3>\n<p>Freewriting is intense, high-energy work. You\u2019ll only be able to tackle a small portion at a time.<\/p>\n<p>So break your project up. Instead of challenging yourself to write a whole piece, think sections, paragraphs or sentences:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Don\u2019t write a press release; write the headline, deck and lead.<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t write a speech; write the introduction.<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t write a blog post; write the first three tips.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For this article, for instance, I divided the project into five sections:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Freewrite your copy.<\/li>\n<li>Divide and conquer (this section).<\/li>\n<li>Write quickly, without stopping.<\/li>\n<li>Banish the grammar police.<\/li>\n<li>Take a break.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Once I finish each section, I get to take a break.<\/p>\n<p>Which is \u2026 now. Please excuse me while I go check my email.<\/p>\n<h3>2. Write quickly, without stopping.<\/h3>\n<p>When you\u2019re writing, write. Don\u2019t edit.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s the purpose of freewriting: to get words on paper (or pixels).<\/p>\n<p>The problem is, if you write down a few words and then stare at them, you\u2019ll edit. You won\u2019t be able to help it. But if you force yourself to write continuously and quickly, you\u2019ll push through that conditioned impulse to fix your copy and actually get some writing done.<\/p>\n<p>When you freewrite, you want to achieve what the folks who study creativity call \u201cflow.\u201d In flow, you feel as if the words are flowing from your fingers \u2014 as if you can hardly keep your hands moving fast enough to keep up with your ideas.<\/p>\n<p>Because of all the work you did in the prewriting step of the process \u2014 and because you\u2019ve selected a discrete section of your piece to write \u2014 you should never have to stop to ponder where your piece is going next or how you\u2019re going to get there.<\/p>\n<p>You want to think through writing rather than thinking before you write. It\u2019s stream of consciousness.<\/p>\n<p>So get your nose out of your notebook. The story isn\u2019t there; it\u2019s in your head. (You\u2019re not writing a research paper, after all. You\u2019re not writing a report.)<\/p>\n<p>Let the momentum of writing carry you along.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s flow.<\/p>\n<h3>3. Banish the grammar police.<\/h3>\n<p>\u201cThe beautiful part of writing is that you don\u2019t have to get it right the first time,\u201d said American author Robert Cormier, \u201cunlike, say, a brain surgeon.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Agreed.<\/p>\n<p>When I started writing this piece, I wasn\u2019t sure how to spell Cormier\u2019s name. But if I\u2019d stopped writing long enough to confirm that Cormier isn\u2019t spelled with a \u201cU,\u201d I would have made the transition from writer to editor.<\/p>\n<p>When you\u2019re freewriting, the minute you stop to correct something, the left side of the brain wins out, and you have to start all over again the process of getting into writing mode.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, lock the editor out and let the writer create. Keep the good ideas and fresh prose flowing.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s the writing strategy of experienced writers: Don\u2019t worry about mistakes when you\u2019re writing. Use a dash instead of a semicolon, write \u201cyou\u2019re\u201d when you mean \u201cyour\u201d \u2014 even misspell the CEO\u2019s name. You can always go back and fix your mistakes later, during <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wyliecomm.com\/writing-tips\/writing-process\/effective-writing-process\/rewriting-stage-of-the-writing-process\/\" target=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">rewriting<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>What you can\u2019t do is go back and breathe life into a stillborn draft \u2014 a draft that never really got written in the first place<\/p>\n<h3>4. Take breaks.<\/h3>\n<p>Freewriting is intense. Your creativity and energy will flag if you stay at it for too long.<\/p>\n<p>So give yourself a time limit. So set your timer or internal clock for no less than five minutes, no more than 15.<\/p>\n<p>When your time\u2019s up, take a break. Make a Diet Coke run. Check your email. File your notes.<\/p>\n<p>Then get back to the job. That minute or two away from the page will leave you refreshed, refueled \u2014 and ready to go again.<\/p>\n<p>You might try taking your break in the middle of a thought \u2014 even the middle of a sentence. You\u2019ll eliminate re-entry problems and be itching to start again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI always stopped when I knew what was going to happen next,\u201d Hemingway wrote. \u201cThat way I could be sure of going on the next day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t let your Red Bull run turn into a couple of hours on Google, a Facebook binge or a major filing system reconstruction. Fewer words! Shorter sentences! \u2014 we don\u2019t focus so much on how.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>Writing is hard because we weren\u2019t taught how to write. Instead, we were taught how to edit: how to spell, punctuate and use the right grammar.<\/p>\r\n\t\r\n<p>But there is a <em>how<\/em> to writing.
