Some say he saved the Western world with his words.<\/p>\n<h5 class=\"standalone\">\u201cNever, never, never give up.\u201d<\/h5>\n<p>He was captured by the Boers and escaped. He wrote about his military adventures in newspaper articles and books. By 1899, he was one of the highest paid and best known British war correspondents.<\/p>\n<h5 class=\"standalone\">\u201cNothing in life is so exhilarating as to be shot at without result.\u201d<\/h5>\n<p>In 1900, when Churchill came to the United States for a lecture tour, he was introduced by Mark Twain.<\/p>\n<h5 class=\"standalone\">\u201cThere are two things that are more difficult than making an after-dinner speech: climbing a wall which is leaning toward you and kissing a girl who is leaning away from you.\u201d<\/h5>\n<p>He coined phrases like \u201cFinest Hour,\u201d \u201cNever give in\u201d and \u201cIron Curtain.\u201d He showed that words can change people\u2019s minds and move them to act.<\/p>\n<h5 class=\"standalone\">\u201cOf all the talents bestowed upon men, none is so precious as the gift of oratory.\u201d<\/h5>\n<p>He won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1953 for his contributions to the written word. In his spare time, he wrote 40 books in 60 volumes and painted more than 500 paintings.<\/p>\n<h5 class=\"standalone\">\u201cWriting a book is an adventure. To begin with, it is a toy and an amusement; then it becomes a mistress, and then it becomes a master, and then a tyrant.\u201d<\/h5>\n<p>His words still inspire, 50 years after his death. He\u2019s been quoted by presidents \u2014 and <em>on<\/em> Angelina Jolie.<\/p>\n<h5 class=\"standalone\">\u201cIf you\u2019re going through hell, keep going.\u201d<\/h5>\n<p>May I ask why every corporate communicator on the planet isn\u2019t using Churchill as her personal and professional muse? Why don\u2019t we model his words every time we write a speech, a sound bite or an executive message?<\/p>\n<h5 class=\"standalone\">\u201cHistory will be kind to me for I intend to write it.\u201d<\/h5>\n<h3>Stop modeling tedious executive quotes.<\/h3>\n<p>One problem with executive quotes is that we model them after other executive quotes. That\u2019s how we wind up putting together ridiculous lines like these, from the\u00a0UK Press quote generator:<\/p>\n<h5 class=\"standalone\">\u201cA market first, our cutting-edge software product is a major move towards WAP-enablement.\u201d<\/h5>\n<p>\u201cRepresenting a radical step-change, our new product set tests the performance of enhanced customer care.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOut-of-the-box, our end-to-end solution recognises the importance of mission critical operations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If you want to write better quotes, steal from better sources. Raise the bar. Change the benchmark. Model the masters instead of the amateurs.<\/p>\n<h3>Raise the bar.<\/h3>\n<p>So instead of using other executive quotations as your models, model rhetorical masters like Churchill. He\u2019s the guy who said:<\/p>\n<h5 class=\"standalone\">\u201cA fanatic is one who can\u2019t change his mind and won\u2019t change the subject.\u201d<\/h5>\n<p>And:<\/p>\n<h5 class=\"standalone\">\u201cI have nothing to offer but blood, toil, tears and sweat.\u201d<\/h5>\n<p>And:<\/p>\n<h5 class=\"standalone\">\u201cKites rise highest against the wind \u2014 not with it.\u201d<\/h5>\n<p>Don\u2019t you wish your executives sounded like that?<\/p>\n<p>They would \u2014 if you wrote better sound bites.<\/p>\n<h3>Find quotes to model.<\/h3>\n<p>Once you run out of Churchill quotations, model Lincoln. Or Reagan. Or Clinton. <a title=\"Or George W. Bush\" href=\"https:\/\/revvingupreadership.com\/2018\/08\/model-michael-gerson\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"locked\">Or George W. Bush<\/a>.
