Come up with brilliant solutions to real-life problems when you use a creative process that works with \u2014 not against \u2014 your brain. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.istockphoto.com\/photo\/human-hand-light-bulb-gm1006466714-271631507\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Image by solidcolours<\/em><\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Welcome to the wonderful world of the creative process, where working sometimes doesn\u2019t look like working, and where sticking with it is often the worst thing you can do to move ahead.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve used the five-step creative process every day since I learned it at Hallmark Cards a million years ago. But I\u2019ve recently learned that it was the creation of a pre-Mad Men-era ad executive named James Webb Young, who put it down in a book called <em>A Technique for Producing Ideas<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Forget the idea that genius is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration. Success for a creative person is at least 51% process. This process can help you develop ideas in minutes that might otherwise take days or weeks or months to develop.<\/p>\n<p>Here are the five stages of the creative process that you can use to come up with a good idea:<\/p>\n<h3>1. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wyliecomm.com\/2023\/06\/5-step-creative-process\/\">Forage, or gather information<\/a>.<\/h3>\n<p>This is the \u201cfeed your brain,\u201d or preparation stage, of the process. Here\u2019s where you conduct market research and interview sources \u2014 or hit the mall, museum and movies \u2014 for the raw material that will become your idea or story.<\/p>\n<p>The key thing here is: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wyliecomm.com\/2023\/06\/5-step-creative-process\/\">Get out of your own backyard<\/a>. The farther afield you seek inspiration, the bigger your ideas will be.<\/p>\n<p>Beware the \u201cbut-that\u2019s-not-like-our-project\/company\/style\/industry\/specialty\u201d reflex. If you\u2019re only willing to steal ideas from communications that are just like yours \u2014 say, the websites of Iowa insurance companies that specialize in agricultural coverage \u2014 your ideas will be as limited as your foraging.<\/p>\n<p>Marketing guru Dan Kennedy calls that approach \u201ccreative incest.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs with actual incest,\u201d he says, \u201cthe product of creative incest just keeps getting dumber and dumber and dumber with each generation.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>2.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wyliecomm.com\/2022\/10\/creative-process-steps\/\">Analyze that information<\/a>.<\/h3>\n<p>Now that you have your raw materials, focus, sift through and organize them to see how the pieces fit together. Look for themes, holes, relationships and structure.<\/p>\n<p>You might call this outlining, writing a walk-away sentence or developing a theme. That\u2019s part of this process, sure. But the real goal is to upload the information to your brain so it can take over while you\u2019re doing something more interesting.<\/p>\n<h3>3. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wyliecomm.com\/2023\/06\/incubation-in-creative-process\/\">Incubate<\/a>.<\/h3>\n<p>During the incubation stage, let the information simmer. This is where you take your eye off the ball and let the back of your mind work on your project for a while. As Agatha Christie used to say, \u201cThe best time to write is when you\u2019re doing the dishes.\u201d That\u2019s when the incubation insight shows up.<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t have time to do the dishes while a deadline is looming? Instead of taking a break, move on to a new project. Forage and analyze project A, for example, then forage and analyze project B. While you work on project B, you\u2019re marinating project A.<\/p>\n<p>Stuck? Don\u2019t plow through. The best approach may well be to move on.<\/p>\n<h3>4. Break through.<\/h3>\n<p>This is the aha moment or eureka moment, aka as the insight stage. This is the magical step\u00a0 where your brain presents a brilliant idea fully formed. This is where you come up with answers to questions like \u201cWhat should I use for my lead?\u201d and \u201cHow am I going to organize this thing?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The French call it \u201cl\u2019esprit de l\u2019escalier\u201d \u2014 the wit of the staircase. That\u2019s when you think of a great idea on your way out of the brainstorming meeting or come up with a snappy retort the day after someone makes a snarky remark.<\/p>\n<h3>5. Knuckle down.<\/h3>\n<p>Take Ernest Hemingway\u2019s advice and \u201capply the seat of your pants to the seat of the chair.\u201d In other words, turn your great idea into a great story.<\/p>\n<h3>Structure creativity.<\/h3>\n<p>Many obstacles to good writing actually stem from a bad writing process:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Suffering from writer\u2019s block?<\/strong> You might not be incubating enough. Trying to force yourself to write before you\u2019re ready is a common cause of blank-page syndrome.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Dealing with procrastination?<\/strong> You\u2019re probably incubating for too long or at the wrong time \u2014 before you forage and analyze, maybe.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Having trouble coming up with fresh story ideas?<\/strong> You may need to spend more time foraging or forage more widely.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>People ask me which is the most important stage. It\u2019s the process, people: Finish the previous stage before you start the next one.
