After a few minutes with my calculator, I was able to report: \u201cTo achieve that amount, some 24,000 people would have to work full time for a year at Kansas City\u2019s average hourly wage of $15.59.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>Did the math<\/strong>. From the Book of Lists, I learned the size of the student body of one of the city\u2019s largest school districts. I divided $770 million by the number of students. The result: in the neighborhood of $35,000 per student.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Asked: \u201cWhat would that buy that students might want?\u201d<\/strong> (That helps you sync your metaphors with your topic.) My answer: some kind of car. That year, Jeeps were popular, so I \u2026<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?client=safari&amp;rls=en&amp;q=how+much+is+a+jeep&amp;ie=UTF-8&amp;oe=UTF-8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Googled \u201chow much is a jeep\u201d<\/strong><\/a> to find out what kind of Jeep I could get for $35,000.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>As a result, I was able to report that:<\/p>\n<h5 class=\"standalone\">The $770 million Kansas Citians give to charity each year is more than enough to buy every student in the Kansas City, Kan., School District a brand-new Jeep Grand Cherokee.<\/h5>\n<p>I know, I know. When you think about statistics, you hear:<\/p>\n<h5 class=\"standalone\">Blah blah blah data set blah blah blaw standard deviation blah blah blah data analysis blah blah blah summary statistics blah blah blah distribution of your data blah blah blah measure of variability blah blah blah raw data blah blah blah inferential statistics blah blah blah measures of central tendency.<\/h5>\n<p>Me too. But anyone who\u2019s mastered seventh-grade math can add some statistical evidence to most stories. All it takes is some extra time with your BFF and research assistant Google, the calculator on your phone and a few minutes to figure out how to figure it out.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s important. As Chip Scanlan of the Poynter Institute says:<\/p>\n<h5 class=\"standalone\">\u201cEvery time you feel your fingers reach for the top row of the keyboard, ask, \u2018What\u2019s it like?\u2019\u201d<\/h5>\n<h3>Resources for writing descriptive statistics<\/h3>\n<p>Need a starting point for your statistical analogies? Find out how many people visited an emergency room or died at work in 2019.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.city-data.com\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>City-Data<\/strong><\/a>. Get everything from satellite photos to resident stats on U.S. cities and states.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.robertniles.com\/data\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Finding Data on the Internet<\/strong><\/a>. Journalist Robert Niles\u2019 list of helpful links to \u201creputable data on everything from public safety to campaign contributions\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>Google<\/strong>. You can\u2019t beat it for finding, say, a list of the top-paid U.S. CEOs, the budget of Uganda or things that are worth $770 million<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/datasetsearch.research.google.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Google\u2019s Dataset Search<\/strong><\/a>. \u201cIf you\u2019re looking for data, your search should start here.\u201d \u2014 The Poynter Institute<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pollingreport.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>The Polling Report<\/strong><\/a>. Find out how many people think what.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bls.gov\/home.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics<\/strong><\/a>. Dig up average hourly wages and more.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.census.gov\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>U.S. Census Bureau<\/strong><\/a>.
