Reading levels<\/h3>\n<p>Since 1847, scholars and others have been measuring how hard copy is to read. Over the years, these folks have created some 200 readability indexes \u2014 from the Flesch to the Fry, from the Fog to the SMOG, from the Spache to the LIX.<\/p>\n<p>With StoryToolz, you\u2019ll get seven readability test scores, including the:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Automated Readability Index (ARI)<\/li>\n<li>Coleman Liau index<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wyliecomm.com\/2021\/11\/measure-reading-levels-with-readability-indexes\/\">Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level index<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Flesch Reading Ease index<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wyliecomm.com\/2021\/11\/measure-reading-levels-with-readability-indexes\/\">Gunning Fog index<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Simple Measure of Gobbledygook, or SMOG, index<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>All of these indexes boil readability grade levels down to a mathematical formula. Those formulas usually comprise two factors:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Sentence length<\/strong>. This measures \u201csyntactic,\u201d or structural, difficulty. Most formulas measure the average number of words\/sentence.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Word length<\/strong>. This measures \u201csemantic,\u201d or meaning, difficulty. Most formulas measure the average number of syllables or characters per word.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Then they calculate readability to determine how easy it is for readers to understand the text.<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t like your score? Write shorter, clearer sentences and choose shorter, more familiar words.<\/p>\n<p>As you use these readability formulas, you\u2019ll notice that each scores text differently. The SMOG\u2019s 12th grade may be the Fog\u2019s 15th. Winston Churchill\u2019s \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/theguardian\/2007\/apr\/20\/greatspeeches1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">We shall fight on the beaches<\/a>\u201d speech, for instance, according to STORYToolz, scores at the:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>14.8th grade on the Gunning Fog index<\/li>\n<li>14.7th grade on the ARI (Automated Readability Index)<\/li>\n<li>12.2th grade on the Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level test<\/li>\n<li>11.7th grade on the SMOG index<\/li>\n<li>10.8th grade on the Coleman-Liau<\/li>\n<li>9th grade on the Laesbarhedsindex (LIX) Formula<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Why the difference? Because of different:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Variables<\/strong>. Some formulas count syllables per word; others count characters. The Dale-Chall uses a familiar words list instead of word length. The FORCAST doesn\u2019t take word length into account at all.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Formulas<\/strong>. Each formula puts different weights on the variables it measures.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Comprehension requirements<\/strong>. FORCAST and Dale-Chall require 50% correct answers on a multiple-choice test, for instance. The SMOG requires that participants get 100% of the answers right. The higher the comprehension requirements, in general, the lower the scores.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The solution? <a href=\"https:\/\/revvingupreadership.com\/2021\/11\/measure-reading-levels-with-readability-indexes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Use the creators\u2019 guidelines for judging difficulty<\/a>. And find a formula you like, then stick with it. (I prefer the Flesch Reading Ease.)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wyliecomm.com\/2021\/11\/measure-reading-levels-with-readability-indexes\/\">Learn more about readability indexes<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>2. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wyliecomm.com\/writing-tips\/what-is-readability\/short-sentences\/\">Sentence length<\/a><\/h3>\n<p>You\u2019ll find everything from words per sentence to characters per word in this section of STORYtoolz. Shorter, clearer sentences are easier to read.<\/p>\n<h3>3. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wyliecomm.com\/writing-tips\/what-is-readability\/word-length\/\">Word usage<\/a><\/h3>\n<p>Here, you\u2019ll identify opportunities to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Turn polysyllabic words into small ones<\/li>\n<li>Strengthen weak verbs<\/li>\n<li>Reduce the number of words that link phrases into long sentences<\/li>\n<li>Clarify confusing words<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>4. Sentence beginnings<\/h3>\n<p>Subject-verb-object sentences are the most readable.
