That basic structure lets the concrete details rise to the top.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s his before and after:<\/p>\n<h3>1. Lead<\/h3>\n<p>Like (too) many of us, Ian was taught to cram all of the facts into the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wyliecomm.com\/writing-tips\/how-to-organize-an-article\/feature-story-structure\/feature-leads\/\">lead<\/a>, so readers would get the key details before they stop reading after the first paragraph. Here\u2019s how his opening paragraph looked:<\/p>\n<div class=\"excerptbox\" style=\"border:1px solid black;\">Employees of Columbia Gas of Virginia\u2019s (CGVs) regional Inclusion and Diversity councils met on January 28 in Chester for the 2015 Statewide I&amp;D Kick Off. While the meeting didn\u2019t quite look like Woodstock, a Billy Idol concert, or Bonnaroo, Baby Boomers, Gen Xers, and Millennials all came together for a day of learning and planning for the coming year. The day\u2019s activities focused on working with Employees Resource Groups (ERGs) and bridging generational differences in the workplace. Deloras Jones, Manager of Inclusion &amp; Diversity, and Jeffrey Hammonds, Senior I&amp;D Consultant, facilitated the discussions.<\/div>\n<p>You can see the problem with that: a lead that is so thick that most readers will stop reading before the first paragraph. Plus, Ian\u2019s delightful concrete details get smothered in all of the not-so-interesting facts.<\/p>\n<p>Instead of a fact pack, write a lead that draws readers in with a concrete detail or three. Don\u2019t tell the whole story in the lead \u2014 that\u2019s what the whole story is for \u2014 but write a lead paragraph that entices people to read the second paragraph.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s how Ian handled that in his rewrite:<\/p>\n<div class=\"excerptbox\" style=\"border:1px solid black;\">While it didn\u2019t quite look like Woodstock, a Billy Idol concert, or Bonnaroo \u2014 like minded Baby boomers, Gen Xers, and Millenials came together to discuss \u2026 their differences.<\/div>\n<h3>2. Nut graph<\/h3>\n<p>Inverted pyramids don\u2019t have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wyliecomm.com\/writing-tips\/how-to-organize-an-article\/feature-story-structure\/nut-graph\/\">nut graphs<\/a>, so neither did Ian\u2019s original story.<\/p>\n<p>When you don\u2019t feel compelled to put all of the W\u2019s in the lead, they need someplace to go. Ian moves them into the nut paragraph:<\/p>\n<div class=\"excerptbox\" style=\"border:1px solid black;\">Members of Columbia Gas of Virginia\u2019s (CGV) Inclusion &amp; Diversity councils along with Employee Resource Group leaders joined one another to learn how to overcome generational differences in the workplace and to turn those differences into valuable assets. Key takeaways from the meeting will help shape upcoming events and professional development opportunities over the course of next year.<\/div>\n<p>At 57 words, that\u2019s still a little thick. What can you do in 25 words or less?<\/p>\n<h3>3. Background section<\/h3>\n<p>No <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wyliecomm.com\/writing-tips\/how-to-organize-an-article\/feature-story-structure\/background-section\/\">background<\/a> in the original story. But in the rewrite, Ian provides context for the story \u2014 the reason the diversity initiative is so important:<\/p>\n<div class=\"excerptbox\" style=\"border:1px solid black;\">Over the past 5 years CGV has seen an unprecedented influx of new young employees creating a wide generational gap within the organization.<\/div>\n<h3>4. Body<\/h3>\n<p>In his first version, Ian emphasizes the event \u2014 what happened during the kickoff \u2014 in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wyliecomm.com\/writing-tips\/how-to-organize-an-article\/feature-story-structure\/feature-article-structure\/\">body<\/a> of his post:<\/p>\n<div class=\"excerptbox\" style=\"border:1px solid black;\">Mike Huwar, VP and general manager and Carl Levander, President, opened the session with a review of 2014 accomplishments and the business case for I&amp;D. Jeffrey facilitated a panel discussion, \u201cGet to Know Your ERGs,\u201d with ERG representatives. The discussion gave attendees a chance to understand ERG objectives and ways I&amp;D councils can support them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cERGs are an excellent way for employees to get involved in shaping the success of our company as well as their own personal success within NiSource,\u201d explained Sasha Furdak-Roy, Business Planning and Strategy Manager and Virginia liaison for GOLD. \u201cI would challenge any employee to read the missions of GOLD, DAWN, LEAD, and NiVETS and say that nothing resonates with them. All ERGs offer professional and personal development opportunities for every employee along with focused events geared towards recruiting and retaining diverse talent at NiSource. That\u2019s why I\u2019m a member of all four ERGs.\u201d Other representatives participating in the panel discussion included Andrew Watson with LEAD, Gina Slaunwhite with DAWN, and Joe Mays with NiVETS.<\/p>\n<p>The day continued with a training session delivered by Deloras called \u201cMixing It Up: The Changing Landscape Across Generations.\u201d Deloras shared NGD employee demographics which reflect a workforce comprised of four generations. The multi-generational workforce presents both advantages and challenges, Deloras pointed out. NiSource has a talented pool of employees with varying perspectives and skill sets but there is also the possibility of misunderstanding between the generations. The training session highlighted differences between generations and gave attendees an understanding of how to turn these differences into strengths instead of perceiving them as barriers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEmployees who have been here for a while have a lot of valuable knowledge and experience while younger employees are able to offer a new and fresh perspective. We all have something different to contribute\u201d added Kristine Johnson, Lead Regulatory Analyst and new member of the Surf-n-Turf regional I&amp;D council.<\/p>\n<p>By the session\u2019s end, CGV regional I&amp;D councils and ERG representatives gained a better understanding of how they can work together to achieve their objectives in 2015. Employees interested in joining an ERG can visit the MySource Inclusion &amp; Diversity page for more information.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In the second, he focuses on the impact: what the attendees learned that might be helpful to you, too:<\/p>\n<div class=\"excerptbox\" style=\"border:1px solid black;\">Deloras Jones, Manager of I&amp;D, led the keynote presentation \u201cMixing It Up: The Changing Landscape Across Generations.\u201d She shared key tips for interacting with coworkers belonging to different generations.<\/p>\n<h3>Tips for working with other generations<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Millennials<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Respect flexible schedules<\/strong>. They like to get the job done but in a way that\u2019s convenient for them. Consider flex hours and accommodating personal needs.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Give them space<\/strong>. They want direction but don\u2019t want to be micromanaged. Keep an eye on things but give them space to be creative.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Gen X<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Give them space<\/strong>. These employees tend to be more independent, so respect their personal space.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Clarify expectations<\/strong>. Generation X takes a more hands-off approach to managing. Ask to clarify expectations if you don\u2019t have enough direction.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Baby Boomers<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Use direct communication<\/strong>. Baby boomers prefer direct, face-to-face conversation instead of long emails.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Fully explain changes<\/strong>. Boomers are likely to resist change unless you fully explain the benefits of those changes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p>Note also the crisp paragraphs in the final version compared to the 100-plus-word-long ones in the original.<\/p>\n<h3>5. Wrapup<\/h3>\n<p>The great thing about inverted pyramids is that you don\u2019t have to craft a conclusion. When you\u2019re finished, you just stop typing. That\u2019s what Ian did in his original.<\/p>\n<p>But the feature-style story structure demands an ending. In his revision, Ian summarizes the story in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wyliecomm.com\/writing-tips\/how-to-organize-an-article\/feature-story-structure\/how-to-write-a-conclusion-for-a-feature-article\/\">wrapup<\/a>, or the penultimate paragraph, topped as it should be with a subhead to separate the body from the ending:<\/p>\n<div class=\"excerptbox\" style=\"border:1px solid black;\">\n<h3>I&amp;D Teams and ERGs are your tools for growth<\/h3>\n<p>You can expect to see more tips on how to best interact with your fellow coworkers throughout the year. Sasha Furdak-Roy, Virginia liaison for GOLD, says \u201cworking with ERGs and your I&amp;D Councils helps shape the success of our company and your own success within it.\u201d<\/p><\/div>\n<h3>6. Kicker<\/h3>\n<p>Ian ends with bang and circles back to the top with a concrete details kicker that leaves a lasting impression:<\/p>\n<div class=\"excerptbox\" style=\"border:1px solid black;\">While we may never agree on which is better \u2014 Taylor Swift\u2019s \u201cLove Song\u201d or Tina Turner\u2019s \u201cProud Mary\u201d \u2014 we can all see the value in recognizing and understanding those different perspectives.<\/div>\n<h3>Focus on the reader.<\/h3>\n<p>\u201cThinking about the reader from the start really changes everything \u2014 from story angle to story structure to sentence length,\u201d Ian says. \u201cInstead of approaching writing from the perspective of a writer, I now think about whether I\u2019m writing a story I would want to read.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<div
