That\u2019s because the worse the problem is, the more dramatic the solution appears.<\/p>\n<p>So pile on the tangible details \u2014 \u201cknees of a 70-year-old,\u201d \u201cIt was agony to \u2026 cook elaborate Sunday family meals,\u201d \u201cMy daughter began doing my clothes shopping\u201d \u2014 to show, instead of tell, how bad it was.<\/p>\n<div class=\"excerptbox\" style=\"border:1px solid black;\">A few months before Louise\u2019s 40th birthday, pain in her left knee sent her to the doctor. She learned she had advanced osteoarthritis and \u2018the knees of a 70-year-old,\u2019 she recalls. He also told her she was too young for knee replacement, so she tried everything else to relieve the pain, from cortisone shots to joint lubrication injections.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing worked except constantly icing her knees, which only lasted temporarily, and taking ibuprofen, which bothered her stomach.<\/p>\n<p>So she suffered. Little by little, Louise stopped doing the things she enjoyed because they were just too painful.<\/p>\n<p>It was agony to stand and cook elaborate Sunday family meals or to whip up home-cooked lunches for her husband, Joe and sons, Joe Jr. and Tony, when they took mid-day breaks from the family mushroom-growing business. She could no longer decorate her house during the holidays, gardening went by the wayside and even housecleaning became impossible.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018My daughter began doing my clothes shopping and I had to have help doing everything, even cooking meals and grocery shopping,\u2019 said Louise, 50, who lives in Eastern Pennsylvania. \u2018Nighttime was the worst. The pain was excruciating. I had to move and move and move until I could get my knees adjusted so I could get myself out of pain. I had to take medication for sleeping because I had so much pain in my knees that I couldn\u2019t sleep.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Louise tried to exercise, but the treadmill was too difficult \u2013 too much pounding \u2013 and then even riding the exercise bike bothered her knees. She swam, but her knees hurt afterward, so she stopped doing that, and she gained weight. The more weight she gained, the more her knees bothered her.<\/p>\n<p>She missed shopping, having lunch and going out with friends. \u2018My mind still wanted to go but my body wouldn\u2019t let me,\u2019 Louise said. \u2018I was feeling old and was being a burden to my family. I felt like I was missing out on life.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>In recent years, Louise had to push through her knee pain, serving as a full-time caregiver for her husband, who was undergoing cancer treatment. Despite the severity of her ailing knees, she hobbled along.<\/p>\n<p>Then came the final straw.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Joe and I found out we were going to be grandparents,\u2019 and I said, \u2018Forget it, I\u2019m not waiting any longer.\u2019 I wanted to be an active grandmother and to enjoy my new granddaughter.\u2019<\/p><\/div>\n<h3>Sandwich the introduction.<\/h3>\n<p>The \u201cintroduction\u201d is essentially the background section. It includes the five W\u2019s of the story, like: What age was the patient? Where did she live? What did she do for a living?<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s not \u2014\u00a0I hope! \u2014 the most scintillating part of your story. And that\u2019s why you want to lead with the problem.<\/p>\n<p>You can either move the introduction below the lead into a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wyliecomm.com\/writing-tips\/how-to-organize-an-article\/feature-story-structure\/background-section\/\" target=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">background section<\/a> to create a classic feature-style story. Or you can break it into parenthetical phrases interspersed throughout the piece, like, \u201csaid Louise, 50, who lives in Eastern Pennsylvania.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Describe the solution.<\/h3>\n<p>The solution is probably going to be your organization\u2019s product, service, program or plan. Remember: The real story here is how your stuff solved the problem. So focus on that, not on every detail of the product itself. Instead, keep this section short and to the point.<\/p>\n<div class=\"excerptbox\" style=\"border:1px solid black;\">Louise had heard reports of an orthopaedic surgeon in her area who was using a special knee made for women. He agreed that, not only would she benefit greatly from having both knees replaced, she was an excellent candidate for the <em>Zimmer\u00ae Gender Solutions&#x2122;<\/em> Knee, the first and only knee replacement shaped to fit women. Louise also benefited from advancements in knee replacement that had occurred in the years since her pain began, such as less-invasive surgery and Zimmer\u2019s high-flex implants including the <em>Gender Solutions<\/em> Knee.<\/p>\n<p>Louise had surgery several months after her 50th birthday, and although recovery from having both knees replaced at the same time was hard work\u2026<\/p><\/div>\n<h3>Close with the results.<\/h3>\n<p>Here\u2019s where you pile on tangible details about how your product or service changed someone\u2019s life (or a company\u2019s bottom line, or \u2026 you get it). Quantify and specify. Name names and number numbers.<\/p>\n<p>And get the results in the customer\u2019s or client\u2019s own words. That makes for a better testimonial.<\/p>\n<div class=\"excerptbox\" style=\"border:1px solid black;\">\u2026 it was worth it, she said. She was relieved to be rid of the constant, gnawing knee pain and clicking in her knees. And was thrilled that she\u2019d be able to start exercising again and focus on losing weight, not to mention cooking, gardening, shopping, decorating, spending quality time with family and friends and \u2018living my life like a 50-year-old in a 50-year-old body.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Beyond all that, she can\u2019t wait to travel, first to visit her daughter, Anita, in law school in Michigan. Next summer she and Joe are looking forward to vacationing in Italy, a trip that was originally scheduled for the past summer but was canceled because she couldn\u2019t walk. \u2018Next year I\u2019ll be running all over Europe with my knees,\u2019 she giggles.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHer only regret?<\/p>\n<p>\u2018I wish I would have done it sooner,\u2019 said Louise. \u2018My advice to people is \u201cDon\u2019t wait.\u201d Why suffer?
