It\u2019s called the inverted pyramid.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s what researchers learned in the \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/2i3hqt2nes2x1stateaf2ff1.wpengine.netdna-cdn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/wayswithwordsasne001.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u201cWays With Words\u201d (PDF)<\/a> study, a collaboration of the American Society of Newspaper Editors, The Poynter Institute for Media Studies, the\u00a0<em>St. Petersburg Times <\/em>and the University of Wisconsin-Madison.<\/p>\n<p>For the study,\u00a0<em>St. Petersburg Times<\/em>\u00a0beat reporters covered their regular beats, writing four versions of each story:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Inverted pyramid<\/strong>, the traditional news structure<\/li>\n<li><strong>Narrative<\/strong>, or storytelling with a beginning, middle and end<\/li>\n<li><strong>Opinion piece<\/strong>, offering a visible point of view<\/li>\n<li><strong>Radical clarity<\/strong>, where the reporter explains everything that might possibly be explained. Who needs to stick around for the rest of\u00a0<em>that<\/em>?<\/li>\n<li><strong>Scored lowest in understanding.<\/strong>\u201cJournalists put background and context in the second half of the pyramid, so the reader who does not know that background cannot understand the top of the story,\u201d researchers said. \u201cAs a result, only journalists and sources can fully understand inverted-pyramid stories.\u201d Is that your audience?<\/li>\n<li><strong>Made a mediocre showing in \u201cinvolvement,\u201d<\/strong>or whether the story made readers connect with and want to get involved in the topic. In our business, we call <em>involvement<\/em> \u201cengagement.\u201d Note that engagement and the inverted pyramid are mutually exclusive.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Why are we still using this thing?<\/p>\n<h3>The feature structure soars<\/h3>\n<p>The feature, or narrative, structure, on the other hand, tended to outperform the other structures in the study. Features scored highest of all of the formats in reading and getting readers across the jump. They also made a good showing in understanding.<\/p>\n<p>Instead of sticking with the inverted pyramid, a story structure that\u2019s been proven in the lab not to work, you\u2019d think writers would stick a fork in it, then go experiment with other story structures. But no.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe basic conservatism and frantic pace of our profession keeps us from enlarging our repertoire of forms,\u201d the researchers lamented. \u201cSo \u2026 we keep boring and confusing our readers, and driving them away. \u2026 We should think of the inverted pyramid as A form, rather than THE form.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id='MC-CYR-GBTIP' class='widgets_on_page wop_tiny1 draws more readers?<\/h3>\r\n<p>Writers say, \u201cWe use the inverted pyramid because readers stop reading after the first paragraph.\u201d But in new research, readers say, \u201cWe stop reading
