Before writing subject lines for your next email campaign, check out this research.<\/p>\n<h3>What can recipients see?<\/h3>\n<p>The number of characters displayed by devices and email clients \u2014 the weird term we use for Gmail, Apple Mail and other email service providers \u2014varies widely. For instance, according to the Nielsen Norman Group:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Outlook displays 78 characters<\/strong> on a browser at the full width of a 15\u2033 laptop.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Gmail on an iPhone displays 36-38 characters<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Yahoo mail displays 38-42 characters on an iPhone<\/strong> before truncating the rest.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>To avoid getting your subject line truncated, the folks at the Nielsen Norman Group recommend that you <strong>limit your subject line to 40 characters<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h5>30 to 90 characters \u201cis the dead zone, and will reduce the chances of opens and clicks in an email.\u201d<\/h5>\n<h6>\u2014 Adestra<\/h6>\n<p>But while <strong>the average desktop inbox displays about 60 characters<\/strong>, according to a study by Return Path, <a href=\"https:\/\/returnpath.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/RP-Subject-Line-Report-FINAL.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>mobile devices display just 25 to 30 characters<\/strong><\/a>. With more than half of your audience members opening your email via smartphone, doesn\u2019t it make sense to make this your standard?<\/p>\n<p>The argument for limiting subject lines to what people can see is that you retain control of the message. After all, you don\u2019t want your truncated subject line to say \u201clice\u201d when what you wrote was \u201clicense.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But that might be too short \u2026<\/p>\n<h3>Longer subject lines perform better.<\/h3>\n<p>Longer subject lines boost response rates, according to Adestra, a U.K.-based email service provider. Its analysis of more than 1 billion emails showed that subject lines of:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>90 characters and more<\/strong> produced the highest response rates.<\/li>\n<li><strong>30 characters or less<\/strong> also performed well.<\/li>\n<li><strong>30 to 90 characters<\/strong> \u201cis the dead zone, and will reduce the chances of opens and clicks in an email,\u201d write Adestra\u2019s Parry Malm and Mark Bonner, the report authors.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Why is longer better? In fact, subject line length accounts for 0.1% of email open rate variance, Phrasee calculates.<\/p>\n<h5>Subject line length accounts for 0.1% of email open rate variance.<\/h5>\n<h6>\u2014 Phrasee<\/h6>\n<p>That\u2019s hardly a statistical significance.<\/p>\n<p>Return Path had similar findings: \u201cOverall, our research indicates that there is actually no correlation between the length of a subject line and its read rate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And MailChimp found that \u201cFor most users, <a href=\"https:\/\/mailchimp.com\/help\/best-practices-for-email-subject-lines\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">there is no statistical link between subject line length and open rate<\/a>. But for subscribers reading your campaigns on mobile devices, shorter may be better.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Test subject lines.<\/h3>\n<p>The solution? Before you press Send on your next email marketing campaign, test your short subject line against a longer one.
