They scour the Web, finding valuable information \u2014 new studies, quotes, resources and insights \u2014 so I don\u2019t have to.<\/p>\n<h5>\u201cOur readers don\u2019t want to just read stories. What they really want is a big button they can push that says, \u2018Solve my problem.\u2019 It\u2019s up to us to be the button.\u201d<\/h5>\n<h6>\u2014 Brian J. O\u2019Connor, editor at Bankrate.com<\/h6>\n<p>That is, they\u2019re <a href=\"https:\/\/news.rutgers.edu\/news-release\/study-reveals-two-types-twitter-users\/20090929#.XPp0z29KgWp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u201cinformers\u201d \u2014 the 20% of Twitter users who tweet information, ideas and insights<\/a> \u2014 not \u201cmeformers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Not surprisingly, informers have nearly three times as many followers as meformers, according to a study by Rutgers University professors Mor Naaman and Jeffrey Boase.<\/p>\n<p>Just two-thirds (66%) of content marketing programs prioritize their audience\u2019s informational needs over their organization\u2019s sales\/promotional message, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/contentmarketinginstitute.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/2020_B2B_Research_Final.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2020 B2B Benchmarks, Budgets, and Trends \u2013 North America<\/a> (PDF), a new study by Content Marketing Institute and MarketingProfs. Yet, 88% of the top performers do.<\/p>\n<p>Here are 9 ways to increase engagement on social media by being an informer, not a meformer:<\/p>\n<h3>1. Share helpful information.<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20170423235004\/https:\/\/www.cmbinfo.com\/cmb-cms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/Social_Sharing_Research_Report_CMB1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Why do people share<\/a> on email, Twitter and Facebook and other social networks? According to a study by Chadwick Martin Bailey:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Because I find it interesting\/entertaining<\/strong>: 72%<\/li>\n<li><strong>Because I think it will be helpful to recipients<\/strong>: 58%<\/li>\n<li><strong>To get a laugh<\/strong>: 58%<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Want your status updates to travel the world instead of staying home on the couch? Get people to share your content by making your social media posts helpful to your audience.<\/p>\n<h3>2. Cover solutions, not services.<\/h3>\n<p>How can business-to-business bloggers build brand awareness by engaging readers?<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Focus on the customer, not on the company.<\/strong> Don\u2019t let your posts sound like a series of press releases. Instead, ask, \u201cWhat problems can I solve? What expertise can I share? What issues can I weigh in on?\u201d Answering questions and providing good service are good social media marketing.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Think of your company as a publisher.<\/strong> \u201cBlog like you\u2019re the best trade magazine in your industry,\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/www.slideshare.net\/kbodnar32\/generating-and-tracking-leads-with-social-media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">says Kipp Bodnar<\/a>, inbound marketing manager at Hubspot.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Promote resources, not products and services. <\/strong>Share white papers, studies, webinars and conference speeches on your social media platforms.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>\u201cThey don\u2019t really care about your products,\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hubspot.com\/archive\/b2b-business-blogging\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">says Rick Burnes<\/a>, inbound marketing manager at HubSpot. \u201cWhat they\u2019re interested in is solutions to their problems.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Offering tips and techniques that serve your customers also help you position your company as the expert in the field.<\/p>\n<h3>4. Quantify value with numerals in headlines.<\/h3>\n<p>Coverlines with numbers sell publications at the checkout counter. That\u2019s because those numbers promise quantity and value. (Oddly, odd <a href=\"https:\/\/revvingupreadership.com\/2010\/06\/read-this-brochure-now\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">numbers sell better<\/a> than even ones.)<\/p>\n<p>The same thing\u2019s true in social media. <a href=\"https:\/\/revvingupreadership.com\/2020\/09\/6-ways-to-write-numbers-based-headlines\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Add a numeral to your blog post headline<\/a>, and it will make the rounds more widely on Facebook pages.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn a wide range of marketing arenas, digits have been shown to perform very well,\u201d Zarrella writes. \u201cThey tend to help conversion rates in the form of prices. And on social news sites like Digg, \u2018Top 10\u2019 style posts have always done well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In Zarrella\u2019s research, blog post headlines:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Including the numerals 1 through 9<\/strong> got passed along more often than average on Facebook<\/li>\n<li><strong>Without digits got shared less often<\/strong> than average on Facebook<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>7. Deliver more value through links.<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wyliecomm.com\/2021\/02\/how-to-engage-audiences-on-social-media\/\">The more links you share, the more followers you\u2019ll get<\/a>, according to research by viral marketing scientist Dan Zarrella. For his study, Zarrella analyzed a random selection of more than 130,000 Twitter users.<\/p>\n<p>He found that Twitter accounts with more than 1,000 followers tend to tweet many more links than those with fewer than 1,000 followers.<\/p>\n<p>And the more links you share, the more retweets you\u2019ll get, according to Zarrella. For this study, Zarrella looked at nearly 10 million random tweets and 10 million retweets.<\/p>\n<p>He found that nearly 60% of retweets include links; fewer than 20% of non-retweeted tweets do.<\/p>\n<h3>8. Post novel ideas.<\/h3>\n<p>Stop posting the same old thing.
