(In fact, neither is really a word!) So why does one seem more dangerous?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Makes me sick<\/strong>. People tend to rate things that are hard to pronounce as more risky than things that are easy to pronounce, according to an article in Very Evolved. (Participants in the study also rated amusement-park rides more likely to make them sick when their names were difficult to pronounce.)<\/p>\n<p>This is just one more argument for choosing words that are\u00a0easy to understand\u00a0and\u00a0easy to pronounce. It\u2019s also another argument that the VP of Engineering\u2019s 15-syllable words are\u00a0<em>not<\/em>\u00a0OK for the client newsletter.<\/p>\n<p>Now\u00a0<em>that\u2019s<\/em>\u00a0scary \u2014\u00a0and sickening.<\/p>\n<h3>\u2018Fluent\u2019 words sell more.<\/h3>\n<p>The shorter and easier-to-pronounce your words and ideas, the more readers will respond to them, according to a new study by Princeton University psychologists Adam L. Alter and Daniel M. Oppenheimer<em>. <\/em>They found that:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>\u201cFluently named\u201d companies outperform hard-to-pronounce ones<\/strong>. A $1,000 investment in a group of stocks with easy-to-pronounce names initially yielded $112 more in profit than the same investment in a group with difficult names.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Pronounceable ticker symbols (PER) outperformed those that were not (GTS)<\/strong> after a day of trading.<\/li>\n<li><strong>People are more likely to believe a saying that rhymes<\/strong> (\u201cwoes unite foes\u201d) than one that means the same thing but doesn\u2019t rhyme (\u201cwoes unite enemies\u201d). \u201cWhat sobriety conceals, alcohol reveals\u201d is more believable than \u201cWhat sobriety conceals, alcohol unmasks.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Simple, easy-to-understand information often outperforms complex writing. Other studies have shown that people find \u201cfluent,\u201d or easy-to-process, information to be more:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Familiar<\/li>\n<li>Intelligent<\/li>\n<li>Likeable<\/li>\n<li>True<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Bottom line: People prefer the simple to the complex.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Fluent\u2019 words more trustworthy.<\/p>\n<p>When information is attractive and easy to understand, people are more likely to believe it\u2019s true than if it\u2019s unattractive and hard to understand.<\/p>\n<p>Even if the statement\u2019s false.<\/p>\n<p>Studies have found that people are more likely to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Accept a statement printed in an easy-to-read format<\/strong>\u00a0than when it was printed on a colored background and therefore harder to read.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Believe a rhyming statement than a non-rhyming one<\/strong>.\u00a0\u201cBirds of a feather flock together,\u201d for instance, was seen as more \u201ctrue\u201d than \u201cbirds of a feather flock conjointly.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>Find unfamiliar graphics, like Chinese ideographs,<\/strong> appealing the more often they viewed them.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Familiarity breeds content<\/strong>. Why these results?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe may feel that something is familiar, and, therefore, conclude that \u2018there\u2019s probably something to it,\u2019 simply because it is easy to read,\u201d writes Norbert Schwarz.<\/p>\n<p>Schwarz is a researcher in the field of \u201cprocessing fluency,\u201d or how easy it is to understand information.<\/p>\n<p>Plus, he says, the easier information is to process, the better it feels. \u201cAgain,\u201d Schwarz writes, \u201cwe often misread this positive feeling as a result of the object\u2019s characteristics and conclude that it is really pretty and appealing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The best way to make your ideas more credible: Make them easier to understand.<\/p>\n<h3>Simple words more trustworthy, II<\/h3>\n<p>Note to engineers, lawyers and management consultants: More than eight in 10 Americans are more likely to trust a company that communicates in clear, jargon-free language.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s according to\u00a0Siegel+Gale\u2018s\u00a0trust survey\u00a0of more than 1,200 American homeowners and investors. It\u2019s just the latest study to show that people are more likely to believe information when it\u2019s communicated in\u00a0clear, simple language.<\/p>\n<p>Here are the results:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Complexity and lack of understanding<\/strong> played a significant role in the current economic crisis, according to 75% of survey respondents.<\/li>\n<li>\u201cBanks, mortgage lenders and Wall Street<strong> intentionally make things complicated to hide risks or to keep people in the dark<\/strong>,\u201d according to more than 60%.<\/li>\n<li>And nearly eight in 10 called for the president to \u201c<strong> mandate that clarity, transparency and plain English be a requirement<\/strong> of every new law, regulation and policy.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cPeople are desperate for clarity and simplicity in order to make informed decisions,\u201d says Alan Siegel, founder and chairman of Siegel+Gale.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is a huge opportunity for government and business to overcome cynicism and regain lost trust through the way they communicate with their constituents and customers.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Choose fluent words<\/h3>\n<p>People prefer words and ideas that are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Fluent<\/strong>: Short, simple and easy-to-pronounce words perform best.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Familiar<\/strong>: Repeated exposure to a word, phrase or idea makes people more likely to prefer it.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Facile<\/strong>: People find rhyming statements, for instance, to be more believable than those that don\u2019t rhyme.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Words do matter.
