Every little thing you do is interesting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fast forward to the last frame, where Wally and Dilbert are sitting with their feet up in the conference room, drinking coffee and checking Twitter on their mobile phones.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere\u2019s idiot boy now?\u201d Wally asks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the parking lot,\u201d Dilbert answers. \u201cNo need to look busy yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Are you meforming?<\/h3>\n<p>Do you really think your social media users find every little thing you do fascinating?<\/p>\n<p>Four out of five Twitter users seem to, according to a study by Rutgers University professors Mor Naaman and Jeffrey Boase.<\/p>\n<p>The professors dissected more than 3,000 tweets from more than 350 Twitter users and concluded that <strong>80% of tweeters are \u201cmeformers\u201d<\/strong>\u2014 those who write mostly \u201cme now\u201d status updates. \u201cMe now\u201d updates cover everyday activities, like going to yoga or heading to happy hour.<\/p>\n<p>The organizational version of meforming includes, \u201cXYZ Company \u2026\u201d:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>President of XYZ company to present conference speech.<\/li>\n<li>XYZ Company moves to new office space.<\/li>\n<li>XYZ Company launches new product.<\/li>\n<li>XYZ Company hires new VP.<\/li>\n<li>XYZ Company wins award.<\/li>\n<li>XYZ Company signs client.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a lot of <em>me <\/em>in social media,\u201d says thought leader Brian Solis. He refers to social media as the \u201cegosystem.\u201d And he points out the great big I in the middle of Twitter.<\/p>\n<h5>There\u2019s a lot of <em>me<\/em> in social <em>me<\/em>dia.<\/h5>\n<h6>\u2014 Brian Solis, principal analyst at Altimeter Group<\/h6>\n<p>This study comes on the heels of research showing that <a href=\"http:\/\/mashable.com\/2009\/08\/12\/twitter-analysis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>40% of all tweets are pointless babble<\/strong><\/a>, along the lines of \u201cEating a sandwich now,\u201d according to a random sample of 2,000 messages by Pear Analytics.<\/p>\n<p>No wonder <a href=\"http:\/\/mashable.com\/2009\/08\/25\/gen-y-social-media-study\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>57% of Generation Y members believe social media is for narcissists<\/strong><\/a>, according to a new study by San Diego State University psychology professor Jean Twenge.<\/p>\n<p>So how do we avoid organizational narcissism? Whether you\u2019re developing blog post content or social media posts, polishing your social media presence, creating your content calendar or just staying active in front of your social networks, these seven content marketing strategies should keep you relevant to your prospective customers:<\/p>\n<h3>1. Write to and about the reader.<\/h3>\n<p>It\u2019s the most retweeted word in the English language, according to viral marketing scientist Dan Zarrella: <em>You<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>And no wonder. Regardless of the type of content you\u2019re creating, starting with <em>you<\/em> pushes the benefits to the front of the sentence and focuses your message on your target audience\u2019s favorite subject.<\/p>\n<h5>Second-person pronouns \u2014 like <em>you <\/em>\u2014 increase readability. First-person pronouns, like <em>we,<\/em> reduced it.<\/h5>\n<h6>\u2014 Ralph Tyler and Edgar Dale pronoun research<\/h6>\n<p>In fact, we\u2019ve known that <em>you<\/em> was a writing power tool since 1934. That\u2019s the year Ralph Tyler and Edgar Dale had adults read passages about personal health taken from newspapers, magazines, textbooks and children\u2019s health books. Then they gave the readers multiple-choice tests about what they\u2019d read.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers found that the more second-person pronouns \u2014 <em>you\u2019s<\/em>\u2014 existed in the passages, the higher readability soared. First-person pronouns (<em>I, me, we, us<\/em>) and third-person pronouns (<em>she, her, he, him, it, they, them<\/em>), on the other hand, reduced readability.<\/p>\n<h5>\u201cIt\u2019s not \u2018who, what, when, where, why and how,\u2019 it\u2019s \u2018YOU, what, when, where, why and how.\u2019\u201d<\/h5>\n<h6>\u2014 Anita Allen, communicator at Sabre Travel Solutions<\/h6>\n<p>Folks, that\u2019s 80 years of research telling us to write about the reader and the reader\u2019s needs. That\u2019s not exactly breaking news. And still, day after day, year after year, we show up at work, open our laptops and write \u2014 once again \u2014 about us and our stuff.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople spend 99% of the time thinking about themselves,\u201d says Liam Scott, a Toronto-based speechwriter. \u201cActually, that\u2019s probably a little low.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Digital marketers: The results are in, and <em>you<\/em> won. Want to reach the reader? Write to and about the reader.<\/p>\n<h3>2. Put the reader first.<\/h3>\n<p>Here\u2019s a simple step: Start your next sentence with <em>you<\/em>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Instead of <em>We\u2019re introducing a new disability insurance<\/em>, try <em>You\u2019ll get back to work faster, thanks to our new Ability Assurance.<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Instead of <em>com helps you improve productivity<\/em>, try <em>Get all your work done in half the time, be the office hero and go home early with Trainingnet.com\u2019s new webinar<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li>Instead of <em>XYZ company offers SuperPlantGro<\/em>, try <em>You\u2019ll grow bigger, lusher plants \u2014 and never have to water again \u2014 with XYZ\u2019s SuperPlantGro<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>To focus your message on your readers\u2019 interests, put the reader first. Start your sentence \u2014 start all of your social media marketing, for that matter \u2014 with <em>you<\/em>.<\/p>\n<h3>3. Try the imperative voice.<\/h3>\n<p>Also known as the command voice, the imperative voice can be commanding: <em>Go to your room! Do the dishes! Take out the trash!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Think of it instead as the invitation voice: <em>Make money \u2026 Save money \u2026 Save time \u2026 Avoid effort<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>When sharing content, write directly to your readers about how they can benefit from your products, services, programs and ideas.<\/p>\n<h3>4. Use a placeholder for <em>you<\/em>.<\/h3>\n<p>When <em>you <\/em>doesn\u2019t work, try a placeholder for <em>you<\/em>. Using TweetPsyche data on more than 60,000 Twitter users, he looked at self-reference on Twitter. He found that Twitter users who don\u2019t talk about themselves much tend to have more users.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWant more followers?\u201d Zarrella asks. \u201cStop talking about yourself.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>6.
