That\u2019s where you develop a plan for your story.<\/p>\n<p>Prewriting includes everything you do to get ready to write. During prewriting, you\u2019ll:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wyliecomm.com\/writing-tips\/writing-process\/effective-writing-process\/prewriting\/how-to-research-for-writing\/\"><strong>Research your story<\/strong><\/a>. You\u2019ve heard the phrase \u201chog in, sausage out.\u201d No matter how accomplished a writer you are, your story will be no better than your material.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wyliecomm.com\/writing-tips\/readability\/short-content\/story-angle\/\"><strong>Develop your story angle<\/strong><\/a>. Come up with the key message that will drive every paragraph, sentence, phrase and word of your message.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wyliecomm.com\/writing-tips\/how-to-organize-an-article\/\"><strong>Organize your piece<\/strong><\/a>. Spend a few minutes organizing your message upfront, and you\u2019ll save hours agonizing over it later.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>What\u2019s not prewriting: revising and editing. That\u2019s the last step of the writing process, called <a href=\"https:\/\/revvingupreadership.com\/writing\/writing-process\/effective-writing-process\/rewriting\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">rewriting<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Prewriting will help you:<\/p>\n<h3>1. Craft your story.<\/h3>\n<p>Typing isn\u2019t writing; thinking is writing. Prewriting is where you figure out what you\u2019re going to say. The rest is just getting words onto the page.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy working habits are simple,\u201d wrote Ernest Hemingway, Nobel Prize-winning novelist: \u201clong periods of thinking, short periods of writing.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>2. Write to length.<\/h3>\n<p>Why write a thesis when what you need is a tweet? Prewriting can help you write to length. That saves you the time you would have spent overwriting \u2014 plus the time you would have spent going back through to edit out the extra words.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKeep it short from the initial conception,\u201d writes Poynter Institute senior scholar Roy Peter Clark. \u201cYou can write a haiku faster than a sonnet, a sonnet faster than an epic.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>3. Get ready to write.<\/h3>\n<p>Prewriting helps you stuff your brain with information and ideas so the back of your mind can work on your story while you\u2019re doing the dishes. Best-case scenario: You\u2019ll write the story in your head, so it flows from your fingers when you hit the keyboard.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWriting is no trouble,\u201d wrote Canadian humorist Stephen Leacock. \u201cYou just jot down the ideas as they occur to you.
