Use time. For the best nonfiction narrative, move the reader from the inciting incident to rising action to resolution and, finally, to denouement. And with this storytelling template, you\u2019re three steps away from a great story. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shutterstock.com\/pt\/image-photo\/alarm-clock-isolated-on-white-background-306104345\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Image by Photoonlife<\/em><\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>That\u2019s the formula Ira Glass uses for the popular National Public Radio program &#8220;This American Life.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNarrative is basically a sequence of events,\u201d Glass says. \u201cSomething happens, then something else, then something else. Human instinct compels us to stick around to see what happens next.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Avoid \u2018and then, and then, and then.\u2019<\/h3>\n<p>But chronological structure doesn\u2019t mean that you\u2019ll start at the beginning \u2014 say, in the maternity ward of a certain suburban Tulsa hospital in 1959 \u2014 then hash out every grunt and groan that follows. (Ever sit through a chronological recitation of someone\u2019s vacation? \u201cThen we had breakfast. \u2026\u201d Hard pass!)<\/p>\n<h5>\u201cOn the most basic level, readers read to find out what will happen next. It\u2019s like making a person scratch long and hard; before she\u2019ll do that, she needs to feel an itch. Uncertainty is the itch.\u201d<\/h5>\n<h6>\u2014 Nancy Kress, novelist and short story writer<\/h6>\n<p>\u201cYou can make an interesting story less interesting by putting it all into one strand: \u2018and then, and then, and then,\u2019\u201d says author and journalist Adam Hochschild.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, he suggests, look for suspense points, where the reader is wondering what will come next. Then instead of simply listing a series of events in chronological order, find the narrative arc. Move the reader from the inciting incident to rising action to the resolution and, finally, the denouement.<\/p>\n<h5>\u201cWhen you get lost, focus on the chronology. There\u2019s a sign above my computer that says, \u2018It\u2019s the chronology, stupid.\u2019\u201d<\/h5>\n<h6>\u2014 Sonia Nazario, Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter for the <em>Los Angeles Times<\/em>, on storytelling<\/h6>\n<p>Author and writer Steven James agrees.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe beginning isn\u2019t simply the first in a series of events, but the originating event of all that follows,\u201d he says. \u201cThe middle isn\u2019t just the next event, but the story\u2019s central struggle. And the ending isn\u2019t just the last event, but the culminating event.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sound complicated? It\u2019s not.<\/p>\n<h3>Suddenly, luckily \u2026<\/h3>\n<h5>\u201cIn the first act you get your hero up a tree. The second act, you throw rocks at him. For the third act you let him down.\u201d<\/h5>\n<h6>\u2014 George Abbott, American theater producer and director<\/h6>\n<p>In fact, Roz Chast summarizes the narrative arc beautifully in a <em><u><a href=\"http:\/\/www.condenaststore.com\/-sp\/Story-Template-New-Yorker-Cartoon-Prints_i8542328_.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New Yorker<\/a><\/u><\/em><u><a href=\"https:\/\/condenaststore.com\/featured\/story-template-roz-chast.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> cartoon<\/a><\/u>. Called \u201cStory Template,\u201d it includes four panels:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Once upon a time<\/li>\n<li>Suddenly<\/li>\n<li>Luckily<\/li>\n<li>Happily ever after<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In a business context, you might translate Chast\u2019s template to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Introduction<\/strong> (\u201cOnce upon a time\u201d)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Problem<\/strong> (\u201cSuddenly\u201d)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Solution<\/strong> (\u201cLuckily\u201d)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Results<\/strong> (\u201cHappily ever after\u201d)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Using this story structure, you can develop a narrative lead, a case study or testimonial, or a short story to illustrate your point.<\/p>\n<h3>Move the problem to the top.<\/h3>\n<p>Only I\u2019d change one element: Start with the problem.<\/p>\n<h5>\u201cWhen I speak to children about writing, I tell them, \u2018You don\u2019t have a story until something goes wrong.&#8217;\u201d<\/h5>\n<h6>\u2014 Steven James, author of <em>Never the Same<\/em><\/h6>\n<p>The conflict or inciting incident is the essence of a story. So start in the middle of things, at the most dramatic part of the story.<\/p>\n<p>Because you don\u2019t have a story until you have a problem. So start with the turning point: The day the tax bill came. The day the bank called your loan. The day you learned the company had shipped its $60,000 circuit board with a fatal flaw.<\/p>\n<p>But if you start with the <em>Suddenly<\/em>, where do you put the <em>Once upon a time?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>You have two options:<\/p>\n<p><strong>1. Sandwich the introduction.<\/strong> That gives us:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Problem<\/strong> (\u201cSuddenly\u201d)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Introduction<\/strong> (\u201cOnce upon a time\u201d)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Solution<\/strong> (\u201cLuckily\u201d)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Results<\/strong> (\u201cHappily ever after\u201d)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>2. Blow up the introduction.<\/strong> You can also explode the introduction, weaving the information parenthetically throughout the piece, for this structure:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Problem<\/strong> (\u201cSuddenly\u201d)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Solution<\/strong> (\u201cLuckily\u201d)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Results<\/strong> (\u201cHappily ever after\u201d)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>The story template in action<\/h3>\n<h5>\u201cSometimes reality is too complex. Stories give it form.\u201d<\/h5>\n<h6>\u2014 Jean Luc Godard, film director, screenwriter and film critic<\/h6>\n<p>That\u2019s the structure PR Manager Robert Kelley used in this piece for Verizon\u2019s employee e-zine:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Problem<\/strong>: A Montana motorist found himself at the front sales counter at the Verizon Wireless store in Missoula. Big problem: The store does not have drive-up service.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Background<\/strong> (if necessary): Store Manager Heather Barnhart reported that the wayward driver fell asleep at the wheel in the wee hours of the morning and crashed through the front of her store. Fortunately, there were no injuries.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Solution<\/strong>: Barnhart\u2019s team along with Senior Analyst-Facilities Jeff Sams worked \u2019round-the-clock \u2026<\/li>\n<li><strong>Results<\/strong>: \u2026 to have the store open for business by the following morning.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Keep it short.<\/h3>\n<p>Your piece doesn\u2019t have to be long to be good.<\/p>\n<h5>\u201cI like a good story well told. That\u2019s the reason I\u2019m sometimes forced to tell them myself.\u201d<\/h5>\n<h6>\u2014 Mark Twain, American writer and wit<\/h6>\n<p>Chast\u2019s simple structure is a good reminder that a great narrative can also be as short as three sentences.
