Then he had the speaker display the matches when making his point about the broken poles.<\/p>\n<p>One thing I really like about Lewis\u2019 approach is that he <a href=\"https:\/\/revvingupreadership.com\/2010\/06\/sync-with-the-subject\/\">synced his analogy<\/a> with his subject.<\/p>\n<p>The best metaphors \u201cmatch\u201d the topic. Matches conceptually go with power outages, and matchsticks are the shape of power poles.<\/p>\n<p>Need to illustrate a big number? Find a way to help audience members visualize it. Big numbers don\u2019t mean anything without a comparison.<\/p>\n<h3>How high is high?<\/h3>\n<p>When Kevin Helliker and Thomas Burton wrote their\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/online.wsj.com\/public\/resources\/documents\/PulitzerKH04052004.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Pulitzer Prize-winning series about aneurysms<\/a>\u00a0in the aortic artery for\u00a0<em>The Wall Street Journal<\/em>, they needed to explain how weightlifting affected blood pressure. They wrote:<\/p>\n<div class=\"excerptbox dropshadow\">Heavy-weight lifting can spike blood pressure to dangerous heights. In maximum-effort lifting, which pits a participant against the most weight he can hoist one time, studies have shown that blood pressure rises to as high as 370\/360 from a resting rate of 130\/80. Conventional blood-pressure monitors can\u2019t even measure levels above 300.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt that level, nobody would be surprised if you had a stroke,\u201d says Franz Messerli, a hypertension specialist at the Ochsner Clinic Foundation in New Orleans.<\/p><\/div>\n<h3>The power of zero<\/h3>\n<p>When Tim Rush, a PR pro at Snapp Norris Group, needed to explain a big number, he\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/revvingupreadership.com\/2010\/06\/need-a-metaphor\/\">asked his subject matter expert<\/a>\u00a0to illustrate the difference between a million and a billion.<\/p>\n<h5>One million seconds is about 12 days, Rush was able to report. One billion seconds is about 32\u00a0<em>years<\/em>.<\/h5>\n<p>Illustrate the difference some zeros make.<\/p>\n<h3>How many steps in a Krispy Kreme?<\/h3>\n<p>&#8220;Food Court&#8221; \u2014 <em>Men\u2019s Health\u2019s<\/em>\u00a0data bit on caloric crimes \u2014\u00a0recently featured this item:<\/p>\n<div class=\"excerptbox dropshadow\">The crime: 1,140 calories in two Original Glazed Krispy Kreme doughnuts and a 20-ounce frozen latte.<\/p>\n<p>The punishment: 91 \u2026 steps up the Mayan temple in Chichen Itza, Mexico. You\u2019d have to climb up and down them 15 times while carrying a 42-pound pack to burn 1,140 calories.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Yikes!<\/p>\n<p>Two techniques to steal from this passage:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Compare big numbers<\/strong>(1,140 calories) to something else (marching up a temple\u2019s steps 15 times) to help readers understand them.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Bring consequences home<\/strong>by putting the reader in the scenario and writing directly to &#8220;you.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>And please \u2026 <strong><em>don&#8217;t<\/em><\/strong> pass the Krispy Kremes.<\/p>\n<h3>Give numbers context.<\/h3>\n<p>\u201cNumbers without context, especially large ones with many zeros trailing behind, are about as intelligible as vowels without consonants,\u201d writes Daniel Okrent, former\u00a0<em>New York Times<\/em>\u00a0ombudsman.<\/p>\n<p>Don&#8217;t make your message so hard. Give readers context along with their statistics. Turn numbers into things.
