<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/vintageprintabledotcom\/4967203070\/\" title=\"Image\" target=\"_blank\">Image<\/a>\u00a0by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/vintageprintabledotcom\/\" title=\"Vintageprintable1\" target=\"_blank\">Vintageprintable1<\/a><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h5 class=\"text_h4\">Frustrated with IBM employee jargon, Noyes composed a pamphlet called &#8220;Dear Mother.&#8221;<\/h5>\n<p class=\"text_h4\">He suggested that employees write memos as if they were simple notes to Mom.<\/p>\n<h3>Dear Byron<\/h3>\n<p>It was 1962, and Tom Wolfe was covering the hot rod and custom car culture of Southern California for <em>Esquire<\/em> magazine.<\/p>\n<p>That is, he was trying to cover it. He was having so much trouble that his desperate editor, Byron Dobell, asked Wolfe to send him his notes so he could have another writer try.<\/p>\n<p>On the night before deadline, Wolfe he sat down at his typewriter and, ignoring all journalistic conventions, banged out a personal letter to Dobell explaining what he wanted to say on the subject. Dobell just removed the salutation \u2014 &#8220;Dear Byron&#8221; \u2014 and published the letter intact.<\/p>\n<p>The result was &#8220;There Goes (Varoom! Varoom!) That Kandy-Kolored Tangerine-Flake Streamline Baby&#8221; \u2014 an article that helped establish the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_New_Journalism\" target=\"_blank\">New Journalism<\/a> movement.<\/p>\n<div id='MC-CTC-CTC' class='widgets_on_page wop_tiny1  wop_small1  wop_medium1  wop_large1  wop_wide1'>\n\t\t\t<ul><li id=\"custom_html-11\" class=\"widget_text widget widget_custom_html\"><div class=\"textwidget custom-html-widget\"><h3>How long should your message be?<\/h3>\r\n<p>Would your message be twice as good if it were half as long?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>Yes, the research says.
