That&#8217;s a difference of 40%.<\/p>\n<p>Making a commitment makes a difference.<\/p>\n<h3>Promise keepers<\/h3>\n<p>Call it the <b>Commitment Rule<\/b>: Our audience members want to act consistently with their commitments and values.<\/p>\n<p>Commitment is one of <a href=\"http:\/\/revvingupreadership.com\/2010\/06\/six-secrets-of-persuasion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">6 principles of persuasion<\/a> outlined by <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Robert_Cialdini\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Robert B. Cialdini<\/a> \u2014 the emperor of influence \u2014 in his seminal book <i>Influence<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s the human condition to keep commitments.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnce we have made a choice or taken a stand, we will encounter personal and interpersonal pressures to behave consistently with that commitment,&#8221; Cialdini writes. &#8220;Those pressures will cause us to respond in ways that justify our earlier decision.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3>Take the pledge.<\/h3>\n<p>That&#8217;s why a restaurant owner reduced no-shows by 67% by asking &#8220;Will you please call if you need to cancel?&#8221; instead of saying &#8220;Please call if you need to cancel.&#8221; No-shows dropped from 30% to 10%, report Noah J. Martin and Cialdini in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Yes-Scientifically-Proven-Ways-Persuasive\/dp\/1416570969\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;s=books&amp;qid=1247339017&amp;sr=1-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i>Yes! 50 Scientifically Proven Ways to Be Persuasive<\/i><\/a><i>.<\/i><\/p>\n<h3>Commit your audience.<\/h3>\n<p>Commitments are most effective when they&#8217;re <b>active<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>Students who filled out a form saying they wanted to volunteer for an AIDS education project were more likely to show up than those who left blank a form saying they didn&#8217;t want to participate, according to the authors of <i>Yes!<\/i><\/p>\n<p>Nearly half of these active volunteers kept their promise in this study by social scientists Delia Cioffi and Randy Garner. Only 17% of passive volunteers showed up.<\/p>\n<p>So instead of, say, having your receptionist write down the time and date of the next appointment on a reminder card, have clients fill out the card themselves.<\/p>\n<p>You can also gain commitment by asking people to take the pledge.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><b>Bottom line: Asking for commitment \u2014 and making that commitment active \u2014 can help you move people to act.<\/b><\/p>\n<div id='MC-CYR-TLR' class='widgets_on_page wop_tiny1  wop_small1  wop_medium1  wop_large1  wop_wide1'>\n\t\t\t<ul><li id=\"custom_html-24\" class=\"widget_text widget widget_custom_html\"><div class=\"textwidget custom-html-widget\"><h3>How do you write messages that readers want to read?<\/h3>\r\n<p>If you want to Catch Your Readers, you need to think like a reader.
